Good

subsidizing higher education should never happen... it causes these universities to continue and increase their tuition knowing uncle sam is going to be writing these student loans regardless of credit.

Same shit with everything subsidized. Look at what happened with mini split air conditioners... I just recently had one put in on my rental but the guy that put it in was saying when he was in mexico these things were half the cost. Once the govt started giving out 30% rebates etc. the price mysteriously went up.

I'm sure there are countless other examples... including EVs.

The greatest burst of technological achievement occurred after higher education was offered for free.

We're already subsidizing higher education to some extent in the form of government backed guaranteed student loans. The banks are getting theirs regardless. This is why college tuition has exploded in comparison to inflation over whatever number of decades.

K-12 is free you idiot.

No... it's not. Taxes pay for all those schools and teachers.

Nothing is free.

On one hand I dont really want the govt to forgive predominantly libtarded student debt holders and absolve them of their poor decisions... on the other hand these student loans are crushing an entire generation and are one of the main reasons why millenials and zoomers arent having kids and arent buying homes... and ultimately if the majority of youngsters in each generation are debtors before they really step foot into the real world I think that the future of this nation is completely fvcked

when covid happened the govt gave ~3.7 trillion in handouts to the wealthy... which helped virtually nobody. meanwhile for ~1.5 trillion they could erase all govt held student debt which would directly improve the lives of tens of millions of young people and almost certainly result in indirect improvements all over the economy.

I remember I was paying off my student loan debt for years like 400 bucks a month and the balance only went from like 33k to 31k despite paying many thousands of dollars all because of the interest rate. Now I see why usury was banned in most major religions because it basically amounts to financial slavery. A treadmill leash they put you on and as a kid I had no idea how all that worked.

I work at a company right now making decent money and a bunch of my coworkers didn't even go to college. They applied for admin roles through a temp agency and proved themselves in the office. College really is a scam. You simply don't need to go and most classes have nothing to do with what you'll be doing in the real world.

I'm never paying that shit off anyway. I'll defer minimum payments til the end of time.

amen to all of this. I managed to pay off my loans because i went to a cheap school before prices skyrocketed and happened to pick a field of study that pays relatively well, but these loans (and the lie that you need to go to college) are currently crushing two entire generations of young people... which is flat out not good for the health of the country regardless of whether you are wrapped up in team red or team blue.

What was your major?
Did you attend in-state college or commute from home?
Was your parents' combined income high?
