I mean, eventually something like this has to be coming right? I could certainly see an NBA where a few "superstars" who are maybe on their 3rd contract just take a year or two and literally form an allstar team where you have one or two perennial allstars coming off the BENCH. Instantly win two chips and dip

While it’s possible, it’s not likely to happen because egos and greed get in the way. Also, the stars are notoriously bad about figuring out what will work well as a team. Look at the best GMs in history. The only great players to stick out on that list are Jerry West and Larry Bird.

The only thing I can think of that comes close to what you are talking about is Duncan taking salary cuts to keep a competitive roster together. And how many Tim Duncan’s are there? People as good as him and as seemingly selfless are extraordinarily rare.
