The beast center in the east vs. the best center in the NBA from 1997 to 2005.

Shaquille played and dominated in the era of the big men. GOAT Centers like Hakeem Olajuwon, David Robinson were unable to stop him. Defensive specialists like Ben Wallace or Dikembe Mutombo were barely able to stop their efficiency.

Sometimes we forget how dominant O'Neal was, he had a short-lived prime but no one, I repeat, no one in NBA history would have been able to stop him.

Joel Embiid has many virtues, but when the moment of truth arrives, it is erased. A guy well into his thirties like Hordford instilled authentic TERROR in the last series that pitted the Sixers against the Celtics.

In addition to the fact that it is an open secret that they gave him the MVP "because he had to", but we all know that it was an armed robbery of Nikola Jokic.

O'Neal walked over guys with similar physical characteristics, Embiid is very good playing against guys who are eight inches smaller and eighty pounds lighter.

Depends if he’s on the 90’s Jazz or not.

No. He'd foul out against Lakers prime Shaq like all the rest while Shaq dropped 30 and 20.

The closest guy to defend Shaq one on one with a chance imho is Wilt.

Embiid has zero chance of defending Shaq. No center today can. Not even Wuudy Sherbot.

I will say Shaq would get called for more offensive fouls with the way he used his elbows to clear out defenders. Often smacking them in the face/head. Nba would definitely crack down on that a bit. What he did to Mutombo in the finals was criminal. But that was 2001. It’s 2023. That type of abuse wouldn’t fly. But Shaq would still Shaq nonetheless adjusting.

The issue with Shaq has always been poor conditioning and poor shooting, the reality is you have to build a specific team around him for success. He also never had a "prime" he had seasons where he was motivated and put the big macs down and seasons where he took his bag and lollygagged through the season.

Most top 100 players would beat Shaq one on one...he was often swept in the playoffs...Reggie, Stockton, Jordan, Hakeem, Robinson all swept him in the playoffs. Jerry West saved this man's legacy by building a Lakers team around him that inched by a mediocre field of players.

Why would he be able to defend him today?

Could definitely flop his way into some foul calls. Shit was play on 20 years ago

Tim Duncan and Arvydas Sabonis did alright against Shaq. Eddy Curry and Bryant Reeves also.

I'd imagine he could hold his own as much as any other great center did, which is to say match him in scoring or foul out in frustration. Lakers Shaq was different tho, a wrecking ball that would probably injure Joel.
