View Full Version : I think it's weird hearing people on the street saying Lebron is the GOAT

I have ran into some people that have said Lebron is the Goat. Strangely, they never have any compelling reasons. It's just if you're not onboard with them, they don't wanna have it. I was driving a guy and a girl dating in the city and they were hitting it off pretty well. As soon as I dropped them off, they got into the Lebron vs Jordan argument.
The guy rocked with Lebron, the girl went with Jordan. She said it's okay to disagree. The guy got emotional. He said, "What do you mean Lebron isn't the Goat? He has never got in trouble off the court. Oh... so you're just go by championships? I see how it is.."
Then I met this other girl that said Lebron is gonna go down as the greatest player ever because he scored the most points. But do people realize that Lebron only has 1 scoring title? Jordan has 10 scoring titles. That just isn't a very good argument when you bring up most points ever. This isn't baseball, where you just go for total career stats like home runs.
For the record, it's fine if you think Lebron is the Goat. I strongly disagree, I don't see it. But the problem is that Lebron fans flip out when you don't think he's the Goat. They are not discussing facts. When they do discuss facts, they leave out important facts. For instance, they'll claim Jordan had Scotteye PIPE-on, but leave out that Lebron had Wade, Bosh, Love, Davis, etc.. and was involved in way more trades to help him.
Or they'll say Lebron had 4 MVPS. But leave out the fact that Jordan had 5 MVPS. They'll say Lebron went to 10 Finals. But leave out the fact that Jordan won more finals and didn't lose 6 Finals.
They'll say Lebron scored more points, but leave out the fact that Jordan played in college, retired 3 times and still averaged more points and had 9 more scoring titles.
They'll say Lebron is taller and can defend all 5 positions but leave out the fact Jordan has him beat in All NBA defensive teams.
They love that Lebron won 4 Finals MVPS. But they'll leave out the fact that Jordan has 6 Finals MVPS.
They love to talk about Lebron's assist to turnover ratio, but leave out the fact that Jordan had a lower turnover percentage.
All paths lead to Michael Jordan as the best player of all time when you analyze the situation properly.

I have yet to run into anyone in real life who thinks Lebron is the GOAT. It's pretty much universal for Jordan.
On the other hand, I hear lots of people on the street calling him "LeShrivel."

Probably in poor dumb areas of the cities you might hear that statement
Most people just refer him as Lebrick or Lebronze

Jordan is the fairly consensus GOAT. You'll have people saying Lebron, Wilt, Kareem, Russell probably. But I feel like Jordan would get probably 2/3rds of the vote. Maybe more.

I greatly appreciate whenever I hear someone who genuinely cares about basketball, who also genuinely believes LeBron is the goat. Because it makes it immediately a no-brainer to write them off forever as someone whose judgement and opinions are worth absolutely nothing.
And therefore I can just ignore anything they have to say about basketball or anything which requires keen judgement/reasoning, from that point on.
Imagine how much of a blessing it would be, if every stupid unreliable garbage MF, willingly wore a shirt that said “I’m a moron, don’t trust me with anything important” ??? Huge favor for all us smart sensible people that might have to hire them or rely on them for something.

I've heard it quite a bit myself, I don't always agree with the reasoning behind it, same as the jordan arguments made that don't make sense. But get ready to hear that more often for the rest of your life lol.

Lebron has most playoff wins in history, most playoff points in history , best playoff +/-, won with 3 different teams and holds about 50% of all the records lol.
If anything he's the easiest player to find 1 million reasons why he's the goat.
The only argument people have for Jordan is more chips, but then they forget that by that argument Russel would be twice as good as Jordan and the discussion stops right there...

Lots of guys under the age of 30 consider LeBron to be the GOAT.
Depending on how much you value longevity, it isn't even that crazy of an opinion. He had an all-time great peak, and his longevity is historically unrivaled.
I personally can't see him at #1, but I value prime competitive dominance more than longevity. Jordan had nearly a decade in which his stranglehold on the league was suffocating. His peers speak of him with a reverence that has never been commanded by any other player. You can tell that they were afraid of him in a competitive sense. LeBron could retire with 100k points and it still wouldn't matter more than that to me.
Plus I just think Jordan's game was superior, from a tactical viewpoint. THE best scoring weapon in history, with an underappreciated knack for not turning the ball over, who consistently makes quick decisions with the ball and doesn't stall, who is also a great defender (I think LeBron at his peak was an even better one, but that's neither here nor there), who is also the most clutch player in the game, who is also driven to win and dominate with a maniacal intensity that seems almost superhuman... I'll take all of that over the game's greatest swiss-army knife, who was always a great scorer (but never the best), always a great passer/playmaker (but never the best), a great defender during his prime (but never the best), who had his clutch, high-pressure triumphs but also glaring, conspicuous moments of underachievement, whose competitive fire has been called into question on several occasions...
LeBron is like taking four roles that can be filled by separate players and stuffing them into one package. But although he could do so much, he didn't excel at any of those individual things in ways that couldn't be matched by others.
Jordan otoh gave you a scoring weapon that is superior to all other scoring weapons in history. He didn't fill as many roles as LeBron, but I think what he brought to the table was more valuable in the pursuit of winning.

A lot of times these conversations about Jordan annd lebron are basically arguments between Mozart and Taylor swift. It’s the difference between someone who builds their reputation upon depth and work rather than someone builds depth and work through reputation. You can argue who is the GOAT. In this case context decides.

Haha, yeah, cuz he's not and never will be. But yeah that's another narrative people are trying to slide on us. As long as MJ is alive he can't be GOAT. No matter what, nobody is gonna care as much about Bron and even when he retires, it's not gonna be like they will make movies on the level of LAST DANCE (tho I didn't watch it hueeh,) as time passes, Bron's place will become more clear. However, people will always bust out DA STATS. He def has a goat resume and nobody can deny that.
It's like Wilt, tho... getting 100 points. People hate on that cuz they are like "at the end they were fouling the other team," but bball is full of haters, and I'm pretty sure that was shot clock era, but the whole, "just dribble out the clock" was still on people's minds. I think they did that to Steph or Jimmer or someone in college where they were like we're just gonna send everyone we can at dude and let the other guys beat us, even if we lose. It's a legit strategy, but sooo hateful.
Soo, to tie that, you can never take Wilt's stats away, and you can never take away Brons longevity/stats and his cultural relevance (even tho the fact that is a meme half the time does kinda take away from that. You can post flopping gifs, that pic of him in the mirror... etc. There is so much that is just like HEH about him.)
He ain't GOAT tho, and even he can't say that with a straight face. I notice he and other people have started kinda chirping at it now that he got the scoring record though. It's good because it makes people think. People need to go back and do the knowledge as to why MJ actually is the GOAT.
