View Full Version : Is there anything you as a coach wouldn’t accept a player doing even if it worked?

A while back, we had a discussion about Dame shooting a 40 footer early in the clock because his man backed off to like 35 feet and people were saying it’s fine even though he doesn’t always make it. In fact, he misses most of them you’ll just never see the clips of the misses. But he makes enough people can accept it.

So let me ask…..

Youre a high school coach and your star pulls this:

Is it ok because it worked?

Is anything acceptable if the ball goes in the basket or are some things wrong in a competitive setting just on general principle?

thats stupid af but it was nice. if they were up by 15 and the game is almost over...ehhh...it's a compromise. sometimes just gotta roll with the dumb shit if they're winning games.

You’re probably right. He’d consider it a knucklehead character issue. He had no problem starting two people known to have had sex with middle schoolers at the same time though. Funny the things we take serious and things we overlook.

I wouldn’t know how to handle it. On low levels you really can’t afford to just sit your best players. Plus everyone has parents who get involved. I guess you just quietly pull him aside and explain that isnt how we conduct ourselves? But if he goes and does it again, what are you really going to do about it? Just sit him down and lose on principle? You would want to…but what if he’s like…top 5 in the state?

Guess that’s where coaching gets past the Xs and Os.

back in the 90's schoolers as well as pro's were letting their shorts hang down to their ankles.

no kid I coach would ever disown their uni .... want a clean look , that makes them look professional.

agreed. it's a fine balance of putting up with stupid bullshit just to keep the ship moving forward, otherwise you're going to tank your own team and its goals for the purpose of making a point. i often deal with similar behavior at work. i've seen guys do things they shouldn't at work (fireable offenses) and go back to work, but they're working hard and we're on a tight deadline, so what do i do? do i send them home and jeopardize the deadline? the client would be pissed off and i would face backcharges to the tune of a couple thousand dollars for each day i'm over the schedule. kind of just let it go and keep moving forward, but maybe when that particular project is over, you pull them aside and tell them you don't ever want to see them do that again. most of the time they will appreciate you being flexible and understand where you're coming from as a leader.

Probably my star player getting into fights and punching other players in the face. I don't care if we're one of the best teams, and you think this tactic works, that doesn't give you a right to punch your teammates in the face.

No, I would let them do whatever works for them as long as I know it will still work when going to the next level that they want to go to

That's way too ghetto a move for old school coaches. My man out here making Lance Stephenson look like mark price.

I'd hire an assistant who's not good enough for the top job but knew how to talk to the players and their parents.
