View Full Version : There are more players from the 06(Bargnani and Adam Morrison) draft left than the 10

Paul George and Hayward are the only ones left on rosters. That didn’t feel like too bad a draft but no longevity. Derrick Favors is second in games played to George and he didn’t play all of 2023. Teams spend millions of dollars in staff and travel and preparation for the draft, intending to set up their future and you don’t know what the **** you’re going to get.

These days with the Ever increasing cap you almost want to focus on just keeping your roster as close to empty as possible, so you can just sign a good young player to more money than his team wants to deal with. But even the rookie scale max is now bigger than the biggest contract in history was 2-3 years ago.

And the NBA has made it harder to just sit on your cap space. I’ve talked a bit about the salary floor lately, but only recently realized there was a change. In the past you had until the end of the season for your salary cap to reflect the minimum they need to see. So you could wait till the trade deadline And trade for some big contract when the original team had already paid half the seasons money to them. How it works now is you have to already be at the salary floor before the beginning of the league year. That’s why teams like Houston spend all that money on free agents instead of waiting to absorb some shitty contract late in the year in exchange for a draft pick or something.

you don’t reach the salary floor and on day one of the league year you pay the difference into a general fund that is now spread throughout the entire players association instead of just the players on your team. But you can’t wait it out anymore.

They make it harder to keep your cap space available by going young but still….with movement the way it is?

Some places might be better off waiting to get the next guy(s) signed than hoping the draft saves them.

if you were a new team owner with virtually unlimited spending potential(Think Ballmer) are you telling your gm to lean towards the “process” and take half a decade drafting everyone you think might be worth a damn and don’t try to win yet or are you more Suns/LA rams “**** them picks…” go for the glory style?

Both styles have worked and both have failed. Celtics stacked picks to the ceiling and are clearly a good teams but they could’ve chosen to convert the picks at several different points. They did go for it with Kyrie. Pick they traded turned into Colin Sexton who I guess they could use now.

I think most of us would rather have the thunder right now than the clippers after they got the massive haul for George. So they focused on draft picks and it seems to be working out so far.

The Suns are trying to Rams it and sign everyone with a name to get a ring then worry about the rest later. A ring is worth a 5-10 year rebuild id say.

Doesnt mean “**** them picks” is always smart.

You lean towards going for it all right now?

By the way the rams gm wore this shirt to the Super Bowl parade:

I could see the suns owner doing the same if they pull it off.
