View Full Version : Create a *realistic* championship team that has peak Marbury as its best player

Title! This probably isn't that hard to do. Peak Marbury seemed to be a top 10 guy according to old forum posts from the early '00s.
I'd go for a defensive-slanted team with a bunch of finishers (shooters, cutters, rollers) on offense. Kind of like an upgraded version of Iverson's 76ers teams. With better offensive talent.
Stephon Marbury
Kirk Hinrich
Robert Covington
Jaren Jackson Jr
Rudy Gobert
What do you guys think?! Is this realistic? Is Marbury the best player?! Three maxes to Steph, JJR, and Rudy; could we still afford Kirk and Rob? I can't be bothered doing a bench.

We talking CBA team because you aren't winning with Marbury as your top player :facepalm
Gobert and Jackson are certainly better anyway. Hinrich would have certainly be a better player to have if you wanted to win games

Yeah I'm struggling to think up a team that will win with Marbury as your best player

For stuff like this I always return to the 2011 Mavs. The team around Dirk couldn't have been more perfect. They not only had the right kind of guys-- a veteran-Kidd type, a Chandler type, a Peja type, a Marion type, a sixth man Terry type-- they had those actual guys you think in terms of: old Kidd, Chandler, Peja, Marion, Terry.
So if the challenge is: make a title team with Melo the best player, 2011 Mavs is where I start. You slot Melo in instead of Dirk. Is it not a title team? I think so. As much as the real 2011 Mavs were anyway (they got really hot and caught some teams at the wrong time).
As for Marbury, I think he's close enough to Melo, and Melo's close enough to Dirk, that it's still realistic.
I don't like clogging the lane up for him with Gobert though. Marbury's greatest attribute was his ability to get into the lane. I would go for something like:
Marbury
Jrue Holiday (elite D, good offense complement for when things slow down)
Herb Jones? (3 and D)
Sabonis? Kuzma?
JJJ (defense, 3s, used to playing with Morant, which is basically the same thing)
I'm faltering with the forwards, it's been a while since I've thought about the current NBA honestly =/

Being the 'best' player doesn't imply any specific amount of differentiation. You could marginally be the most impactful player. You could be the most impactful player comfortably.
You don't think Marbury could be part of an ensemble and arguably be the best player? Like the '04 Pistons? The '70s Knicks?

Yeah, you're right about the paint-clogging and Marbury's rim pressure. I guess it depends on the specifics of this hypothetical. What era, really? Would it be realistic to expect to have a three-point shooting center in the older eras?
But yeah, I 100% agree. Brook Lopez and JJJ would be nasty together for Marbury. Lots of spacing in the half-court set; lots of blocks and stops to get Marbury out in transition.

Carmelo pretty much the same as Marbury. No chance

no Marbury was about stats and money. If he thought any different he would have stayed with Garnett

He said he didn't like living in Minnesota because he found it hard to acclimate to such a cold and unforgiving environment. And that he was used to a more diverse background, being from Brooklyn.

He was from New York which is no beach party in winter. They were friends even. He wanted to be the guy and make more money. He got it. Winning just wasn't part of his equation until he went to China

Marbury's nobody, now. Because he flamed out and never won. What is Dirk if he never gets hot in 2011? Or if Lebron plays like Lebron in the finals?
Dirk's legacy was an open-F'in question before that title. He was in the Tmac / Pierce / Iverson zone that great offensive players who don't win get put in.
I would say the odds are against Marbury being able to sustain a #1 offensive role through 4 straight rounds to a title; at the same time, I think if guys like Billups, Jimmy Butler, and AI can come close with the right supporting cast (or in Billups' case win it, though I would credit that title to Ben Wallace first), if you caught Marbury at the right time I think he could come close too. And once you're close you can get lucky, as the 2011 Mavs did.

Dirk is considered one of the best PF's ever regardless of his title. Marbury will always be considered empty stats that only cared about money and numbers. AI wasn't close. He made it to the finals out of a weak east. Lost in 5 didn't they? Billups I would credit Kobe and his selfish play.
