So basically it looks like we've got 15 films in the award mix. The big issue is if comes out this year or if it gets delayed to 2024. It's a bit complicated because it's a WB film. Because of the Barbie award push, WB is in a bind. They have Dune, Barbie, and The Color Purple so they could end up competing against themselves in 2024 or losing out to the non-delaying big films of 2023.

Apple has two huge historical films coming out, Napoleon and Killers of the Flower Moon. Napoleon might not register with the voters and get pushed off. Ridley Scott films have a history of aging well but not connecting with the voters. Killers of the Flower Moon on the other hand is a front runner. This could be Scorsese's last big hurrah with DeNiro and Gladstone has favorites to sweep the supporting field.

The irony of Barbie and Scorsese is Oppenheimer is in the mix to have a huge year. Nolan has been long overdue for awards thanks mostly to politics. But we just got news out of Venice that Yorgos Lanthimos film is an instant classic, Poor Things is basically a Frankenstein film with a heavy Tim Burton meets Terry Gilliam feel to it.

The female push is going strong and the closest race is going to be in foreign language field. With Past Lives and Anatomy of a Fall fighting it out for a director's nom, foreign language film, and original screenplay. Zone of Interest is the third foreign film in the mix and it's a Nazi film but apparently not really it's subtle which is important because we've also got Bradley Cooper in Maestro from Netflix.

And finally Alexander Payne is back and his films are generally loved as he has a nice Palate cleanser in The Holdovers.

So that's

The Color Purple
Oppenheimer
Barbie
Poor Things
Zone of Interest
Maestro
The Holdovers
Past Lives
Killers of the Flower Moon
Napoleon
Anatomy of a Fall

Barbie? Really?

The academy loves Greta Gerwig the writer director so I would expect her to get a fourth maybe fifth nomination this year. It's not going to win but like Top Gun Maverick or Black Panther it's box office and cultural impact is going to resonate this year.

So that Ben Shapiro boycott was an epic MAGA flop.
