The overall NBA field goal % for the '22-'23 season was the highest it's been in over 30 years. The highest since the '89-'90 season in fact. This despite having well over 5 times as many 3-point attempts per game. It's certainly the highest FG% since the start of the 3-ball-fest era.

To what do you attribute this? It could that

a) Players are better shooters all of a sudden.

or

b) This was the second year of using the Wilson ball. Players may have needed a year to get used to it, but now that they're used to it, it's simply a superior ball to the Spalding model.

Or perhaps it just shows that defense is the weakest its ever been. :confusedshrug:

So you mean to tell me it's the highest since the 80s to early 90's, the time frame that gave us a big chunk of the top 10 greatest players ever? So it's basically the weakest defense has been since Mj, Magic, Bird, etc were all in their primes? That's crazy thanks for backfiring, err I mean shedding light on this little known fact.

I knew one of you guys was going to try to go for that. :lol Doesn't wash though.

I reiterate: There were over FIVE TIMES the amount of three point attempts as there were in the '89-'90 season. If you eliminate those and just go by 2-point field goals, this last season blows 80s/ early 90s out of the water. Go ahead and do the math if you dare. We're talking around a 55% fg percentage.

Sorry, nice try.

As expected that went smooth over your head like an F-16. I don't actually believe this is a real debate, it's far too shallow a thought. If you're going to make that statement it gives way to tons more that you aren't equipped to deal with. Yes there are more 3s in this era, so continue your stupid train of thought. Does that also mean:

-This eras fg% is higher do to the skill/threat of the 3 making paint points more available?

- That eras defense was actually in fact inferior, due to not having to defend the entire floor from the threat of scoring?

- without the threat of a 3 pretty much at all in comparison, why did the fg% still remain that high?

....and so on. There's a reason it's fruitless for most fans to compare eras. Because it gets done in either an extremely lazy, or incompetent manner. In your case? Both.

NBA teams are trying as much as possible to load up on defensive 3 and D wing players as well as versatile bigs that can defend pick and roll yet OP thinks defence is weakest its ever been. Teams overpay for defensive 3 and D players.

Maybe because its harder and harder to guard a more spaced out court from all the 3 point shooting.

This is obvious to nearly every single fan base that watches basketball.

All these versatile defensive wings that every team hunts tooth and nail for in free agency simply aren't trying. It's a conspiracy to inflate NBA scoring numbers and NBA defensive players are in on it!

NBA 2-point field goal %

2023...... 54.9 (open paint)
1990...... 48.6 (packed paint)

Today's game isn't really basketball - it's more of a technique - the spacing and no-contact makes it look more like a dance routine or marching band than basketball.

It's hands-off, spaced-out, no-impede (no defense), aka beginner format

Exactly.

8ball and sdot_thadon don't seem able to grasp this despite the raw data being put right in front of their faces.

Just see things from a certain point of view. One could easily say you're incapable of grasping the concept of evolution. Rather than seeing a game that isn't "your" basketball, I see a game that's evolved in a way that players have become scoring threats up 35 feet in some cases, rather than only being able to shuffle up jumpers from just outside the paint. It's cause and effect the threat and defensive responsibility being stretched further out makes it exponentially more difficult for the teams to protect the paint AND the perimeter without extraordinary personel. So obviously most of the time they are forced to concede one or the other. In the 90s nobody really had a respectable jumper past 15 feet lol, Elite guys could maybe stretch it to 20 footers. And snipers, could shoot 3s albeit at a seriously low clip attempt wise. So obviously it was harder to score closer to the rim because no one had to respect outside shooting to a degree.(I don't mean not at all, just nowhere near the modern game) Literally one of Jordan's signature career moments was based on a team not being willing to respect him shooting from outside lol. Don Nelson literally used to camp non shooters out at 3 point range just to force spacing. These are 2 pretty different times.
