The origin of this phrase can be traced back to ancient times. It is an idiom that means not to blame the person who is delivering a message, even if the message is unpleasant or unwelcome.

Most left wing extremists today are guilty of blaming the messenger. In fact it's what drives most left wing tribalism. Whereas right wing tribalism is typically driven by hatred of left wing policy, left wing tribalism is driven by hatred of right wing people.

Look no further than someone like Matt Walsh, a guy who's utterly reviled on this forum by some of the left wing posters. They presume that Walsh is a bad guy and a bigot, therefore no matter what position he takes they aren't allowed to agree. Conceding that Walsh might be right about something would be the same as siding with the Nazis during WW2. Even hardcore right wingers subscribe to the broken clock theory once in awhile, but hardcore left wingers aren't allowed to concede ground no matter the subject at hand. If someone like Matt Walsh said that water was wet, woke lefties would look for a reason to disagree purely out of obligation. Can't be caught agreeing with a nazi after all.

Look at what's happening with all the migrants. Republicans said for years that this was a major problem but left wing tribalists paid it no mind and chalked it up to racism and fear mongering. It's a made up issue they said. Orange Man Bad. Fast forward to current day and now we're hearing the exact same rhetoric from mayors and governors on their own side. Now all of a sudden it's okay to raise the issue without being called a racist.

Because lefties are more concerned with who's delivering the message than the message itself.
