What doesn’t show up in the stats, but would require actually watching the games, something that these 2019, 2021, and 2023 teams didn’t have …

Kobe Bryant played the absolute best perimeter defense on the team.

So intensity, competitiveness but also national basketball pride.

Kobe basically being the sole reason for spearheading a change in the entire culture for the competitive levels of LeBron and Dwyane Wade, particularly on that end of the floor. And restored Team USA’s mystique and intimidation factor.

Pressure defense, which was the main reason why USA was able to trounce every competitor, the way they had the entirety of the 90s to 2000.

Kobe also performed the best offensively against the actual best competition. He demolished Manu and Argentina, and as you know, saved us in the gold medal game vs a PEAK Spain team.

Christ this is absolute BS.

Like most of what Kobe has benefited from, the narrative worked out nicely for him. He played well down the stretch against Spain and stole the spotlight, despite Wade playing better and hitting the real sealing shot.

Kobe was also certainly not the best perimeter defender. Again, something you can get away with saying because you can't measure it completely.

Yup.

Kobe let Wade and LeBron take the most shots and focused on defense. Taking the best offensive player on every team USA faced.

He locked Manu up as revenge for 2004.

And then when the going got tough, he put a dagger in Spain to win Gold, taking over the entire 4th quarter when it could've gone either way.

Short video footage isn't proof.

Wade was the best player, and best defender on that team.

Comfortably too. Played the best in the biggest game too.

Facts, with that said, Wade was clutch as hell. He was the best player from eye test stand point (besides Kobe’s perimeter defense for the entirety of the Olympics) and Flash also carried us in the gold medal game for the first three quarters. And also hit a dagger 3 and mean mugged the Spanish fans after Kobe took over the game and hit that four point play that helped seal the deal. Can’t dismiss that. Wade was amazing against set half court defenses. Shooting the notion down that you have to be a great shooter to successes in international play. Wade was a lightning fast but physical combo guard who could slither through any defense and finish at the rim. LeBron’s stats were very padded by slashes and fast break dunks tbh. Kobe and Wade made that team. They were dynamite to watch them play together. Especially defensively. It was like a mini MJ / Pip scenario defensively from the Dream Team. Kobe was definitely the best defender on the perimeter then Wade. Dwight had the interior on lock. And Bron had a great defensive game against Dirk and Germany too tbh.

yeah.

plus 2008-2009 wade played the best help defense from a guard that I've seen in my life. he showed that in the olympics too racking up steals

the clutch steals and blocks he would get were just ridiculous

Gold Medal Game wouldn’t have been close if the refs didn’t put USA in foul trouble super quick taking Kobe and LeBron off the floor. Spain didn’t even have their at the time second best player, Calderon, but they had him the first game against USA where we molly whopped them by like 35 or so … gold medal games always have suspect officiating internationally. Always.

Redeem Team USA was nasty. They beat peak Spain and tail end of prime Argentina. They had more interior presence with Beginner Prime Dwight over 2012’s Tyson Chandler. Beginner Prime LeBron, Peak CP3, Peak Deron, Past Prime Kidd, Peak Wade, Peak Melo, and Twilight Prime Kobe leading them.

Where as 2012 had Peak LeBron leading them, Beginner Prime: KD, Westbrick, Harden, and Twilight Prime Melo, and Past Prime Kobe.

facts.

I recently rewatched the 2012 gold medal game against spain myself and the 2008 team would annihilate them. kd was amazing and both teams have prime lebron - everything outside of the addition of kd's shooting is in the 2008 teams favor

2012 gold medal game with spain - great game:

Nope. LeBron would take that spot. Kobe would be clumped with Wade and Paul at max effort. Though honestly he has worse instincts than both.

Kobe ain't worse than LeBron defensively in NYC but somehow better in China.

LeBron specifically said he was inspired to up his intensity defensively due to Kobe, and carried into the next season which is when we saw all the chasedown blocks and whatnot. So there is that.
