Money....and the concept of having to pay for something you want prevents people from just taking what they want. Humans are not perfect dumb animals like cows and sheep. Given the opportunity, a huge percentage of humanity will take what's not theirs and will take more than their fair share.

The only thing we can hope for is a society with a strong enough economy that stimulates innovation and also allows people to treat themselves to something they want, outside of their general necessities such as food, energy, and transportation.

Strong economy always equals a big government, and I’m against government altogether. Also, a strong economy just means businesses are doing well it doesn’t mean the people are. The United States has the “strongest” economy in the world by GDP, but if we look at quality of life and happiness measures the Nordic countries always win. I’m sure you would call them socialist, too. Those are the best countries in terms of income equality as well so they would fit your desire of everyone being able to treat themselves to what they want the best I would think.
