from a new york times review in 1985

"by no means the ultimate horror movie it aspires to be"

amusing because perhaps some part of him feels like it is

one of my favorites either way

The Exorcist.

You don't need to watch anything else.

So overrated
Yeah, I saw it and was not remotely impressed.

Most overrated horror movie though has to be Halloween, it gets legitimate talk as the best horror movie ever which is inconceivable to me.

Hilariously timed but I actually just watched The Exorcist for the time in like 10 years tonight. It’s excellent. People get snooty about horror now but it has so much influence. People in 1973 were so much more aggressively Catholic than now but in its time it was crazy and it still kind of holds up.

It’s in the same realm as Jaws in that it’s slightly dated but if you respect the art of the time it’s impressive. A lot more set up.

The OG Halloween is GOATed as well. Kicked off an entire genre of worse movies that that.

I admittedly have only seen the Exorcist once, which was years ago, but I found it to be very disappointing, nor did I find it scary at all. It could just be a movie not meant for me since I'm not religious, but it's likely a film that needs at least two viewings.

Halloween though I feel like is a totally, painfully ordinary movie :lol And not remotely scary. And I say that as someone who respects it for being the pioneer for slasher films, producing an amazing theme song, and creating an iconic horror character. If you want to claim it's GOATed due to it's legacy and contribution to the genre, I would honestly agree with you on that, but the movie itself? It's one I've seen multiple times and have always felt very underwhelmed when watching it. I don't think it holds up today at all

Other horror movies from around that time like Night of the Living Dead, Texas Chainsaw Massacre, The Shining, and even the older Psycho are all better movies overall and I feel hold up better today than Halloween does. Even sticking to pure slashers, I feel Nightmare on Elm Street was better and much more interesting.

every horror movie is scary if you put yourself in the movie

same could be said for every movie

halloween left a greater impression on me than the exorcist or jaws or any other 70s horror i saw

this is more contemporary and has a halloween vibe

Yea wouldn’t necessarily say this time around that I found The Exorcist particularly scary, but more so just a really good story and movie. I feel the same about the Shining. Really great horror movie but not really all that scary. Impending sense of doom, sure. But not terrifying.

We’ll have to agree to disagree about Halloween. That along with Psycho and TCM are the holy trinity of slashers in my eyes. The pacing, score, and acting are all excellent. Everything is so deliberate.

This was underrated. I was waiting for a crazy barbarian to show up but realized they titled it after the street where it takes place.

Just watched this the other day... its not that good but the horror kept coming and when it's supernatural, you have a sickly feeling like you can't get away unscathed :

Great choice...not necessarily scary per sé but love the atmosphere it captures, those were really scary times full of superstition and dread in that part of the world.
