The Holmgren vs. Wemby thing will make for a great discussion towards the end of the season. Both guys have huge potential, and it will be interesting to see which one ends up outshining the other.

There are plenty of threads about this topic. No need to create another one

Didn't realize chet could dribble like that. It's like Kevin McHale being able to go coast to coast crossing people up going behind the back and between the legs full court. That's pretty crazy.

He has looked really comfortable pushing the ball up the court.

Wembanyama may end up being better but anyone who has him in front of Chet for ROTY right now ain't a serious person.

Chet is shooting better. Maybe because he's not the main focus of the other team like Vic. Also his 2nd year in the league much like when Simmons won it over Mitchell

Yup okc is way more talented than the spurs... helps the numbers when you're not the sole focus of the defense like SGA is.

Chet looks a lot like MVP Durant with better defense in how he moves. Not saying he shoots as good. Markannen mold.
Wemby will be a more traditional center I think eventually.
Chet would play PF probably.

He definitely resembles KD more than Wemby, who feels more like AD to me.

AD yes, I was looking for a comparison for Wemby.
Have to remember Wemby is college aged and will look different in a couple of years.
Chet is outside in and ideally Wemby is inside out.
chet is very impressive every time you catch an okc game
kids got skills
already knew about the defense and wingspan, didnt know he could shoot like that

Chet has been so good.
All hype aside, this is actually a legit question right now.

Now go peak at all the advanced stats.
Chet clears Wemby (so far in their rookie years).

Chet is just so much more polished. Much better shooter and ball handler. Sets proper screens and knows where to be and when. Doesn't shy away from physicality. Victor has 20+ pounds on him but plays much softer. It's a mindset.

they won't be looking at advanced stats when they pick the ROTY. Kessler might have won it last year if they did

If Chet actually is Wembys rival in future years, it will be ironic that the tables have switched.
Duncan was the one, much like Chet who came into a great situations while Garnett came into a terrible situation much like Wemby has.

100% this. Watched Wemby tonight and he was not good, plus he has bad defenders all around him minus a couple of guards. I'm sure it helps that Chet had access to the finest NBA help for a year... just like I said about Ben Simmons :lol

I agree, altho Yama did play professionally, so he wasnt limited in the time he could spend on basketball. Also the Spurs started working with him full time basically since the moment they won the lottery. So he’s had a ton of top flight preparation to get here.
That said, he HAS clearly made a lot of progress from where he was originally as a prospect. He’s obviously taking his career seriously and doing what he has to do. But he does have a higher learning curve than Chet, whose dad was a D-1 bball player himself and was teaching Chet the game from a young age.
Similar to someone like Curry, Chet was raised to do this from Day 1. I think in Yama’s case it was more that when he emerged as a giant he was prompted to go into basketball. So he’s not necessarily the most natural talent out there. He’s gotta keep working at it but so far I think the progress he has shown bodes well.

Victor's parents were professional basketball players I believe. Or at least his mother was.

Ah, did not realize this. I thought he got into basketball later for some reason. Must be confusing him with someone else.

I think Victor's just a little soft right now and too obsessed with fitting an aesthetic and not being effective. Has the Chris Webber disease: wants to play like a guard, a "modern" big. But I'm not sure he'll ever be good enough of a shooter and ball handler. Chet is a different story, though. He can definitely play outside off the strength of his perimeter play.

Chet has a higher motor, and that is the difference right now while they are inexperienced.

Wemby could actually be compared to a young Kevin Garnett too, though KG was always more talented with the ball, but they are both oversized and play smaller than they are.
If holmgren manages to lead his team above somewhere from their 4th-6th seed last season, i think it'd be safe to say that he would have a fair chance.

he's not leading anyone and winning has little to do with ROTY

20 lbs spread over 6 additional inches in height doesn't really give you a physicality advantage.
I wouldn't say he's much more polished either. Wembanyana has been hitting shots from all over the court and is silky smooth in his movements.

Ahhhh, that is overdoing it. He is smooth for his size, but still quite herky jerky.

I wonder for how along Pop is going to let Wembanyama get away with thinking he is a wing.
All that dribbling into middies may look fancy and impressive for a guy that big but it's still a guy that big doing it and the inefficiency (both shooting and high TOs) won't ever truly go away.

Chet has never been LIKE THAT. Those comparisons to KG have been proven to be so far off it makes you wonder wtf people are thinking typing that shit.
Wemby is generational.
Chet is a footnote of the era. Big difference.

I actually never heard anyone make a Chet-KG comparison, and I grant it's not the first comparison that would come to my mind, but to say it's 'so far off you wonder wtf people are thinking' after he just had 5 blocks in his playoff debut does seem like odd timing.
The thing I found strange today, with both Chet and Porzingis, is that neither even had an attempt on a rim running dunk off pick n roll, after having a lot of success doing that kind of thing during the regular season. These guys are long limbed and agile, they should be getting a handful of lobs every game for easy baskets. And in the regular season they did. Today they were both jump shooters with the occasional post up mixed in. There was no two man game involving them. It's a head scratcher because that seems like a pretty easy way to pick up points, and force the defense to adjust and open up things for the rest of your offense. Especially OKC who struggled shooting today, probably could have used a bit more of that.
I dunno if there was something the defenses did to keep those guys from getting to that or what, but I saw the majority of both games and it was noticeably absent.

I think it's too early to make a call one way or the other.
Chet had a very good rookie season; it was one of the best of the 21st century. He was the second-best player on the one seed in the west and two seed in the entire NBA. Also, he's probably the most important player on the team because he's the only center that can protect the rim and make their offense work.
Chet is great and probably will have a HOF career barring injuries but if Wemby can have 12-15ish healthy seasons I genuinely think there’s a high chance he will be the GOAT.
