The guy shot FT at ~52%.
Teams today score at ~60% efficiency.
This means if teams can spare a couple players to foul out every game, there would be 12 very inefficient possessions every game for Shaq's team. More if they have more bodies.
Add that to Shaq's extreme inability to guard PnR.
I mean I see people saying Shaq would be even more unstoppable today. I really don't see that.

The problem is you get to the penalty early and his teammates would also go to the line every time they are fouled making it hard to play defense. You are not going to win games with that type of disadvantage

Its not that hard to predict what would happen if you pair Shaq with four other shooters on the floor. Lets just say he would be in Goat talks if he played in this era.

Yea this is a problem with hacking Shaq lol
However teams would do it even more in crunch time. That would be a legit issue although I will say.. Average efficiency late in games with defenses set are much much lower than 60%. But still his teams would hurt more than they did in the early 2000's from his poor free throw shooting.

Out of all the all time greats Shaq is the most exploitable in terms of fouling him and FT% and his non shooting and his inability to guard 3 pt dancers that will try to iso him.
But OTOH Shaq could legit crush guys that are even trying to foul him no matter how tall or strong you think you are and give a reality check to a while modern day frontcourt lineup.

Didn't they introduce that rule about intentional fouling with two minutes left? That would mitigate Shaq's issues.

I'd probably just bark next to him and see how he responds. humor is taunting.

Exactly, you'd be putting the entire team in the penalty very early. The moment the game starts you start fouling him and the team is in the penalty with 8-9 minutes left to go. Now your defense is compromised for the rest of the quarter, and it's not like the offense needs any more of an edge in todays game than it already does. The league would probably do something to outlaw that because you'd be completely breaking the flow of the game, it would be unwatchable.

They tried that then. After he gave the pacers like 45/20 game one of the finals they just fouled him on the catch next game and he shot 39 free throws, damn near fouled out the whole frontcourt and backups, and he had like 40/25 despite missing most of the free throws and they won again.
If teams want to foul out their best bigs early his team would let them. Theres a reason the starters start. You eventually hurt yourself and don’t have fouls to spare later and he’s scoring one on one or you’re doubling and giving up threes while also being in the penalty.
They would probably post him up to start every game quarter just to play on the penalty the whole time.

Kobe went into detail about this too. When he gets fouled the amount of times that he did, it weakens the opposing teams offense because their is no rhythm to the game and they are always taking the ball out of bounds or he misses and the defense is already set.

The problem is if you just hacked Shaq non-Stop every key functional big man on the team would foul out

That's more or less what was happening back then, and that was in an era where teams loaded up on frontcourt players expressly to have expendable fouls.

before analytics many thought fouling was a good thing. Jazz usually led the league under Sloan. That philosophy has changed. You don't want guys shooting free throws even if they suck because others will get free throws in the penalty that don't suck at them
