It seems old school 60s and 70s players had to play by "gentlemans rules". No trucking or egregious violence.
Wilt basically had to pussyfoot around while Shaq was allowed to lay haymakers.

Always found it amazing that Wilt never fouled out of a game with the rules being so against offensive players like that.

I mean... look at how he moved. It was so lateral and non chalant. Hook here or there or a dish. Shaq was just unbelievably violent by comparison. Crashing into you with full momentum on every dribble, throwing you backwards and gorilla slamming the ball through the hoop.
When people refer to the modern game as soft they're not typically talking about the physicality of offense. They are usually alluding to the physicality of defense.

Usually for sure... but this whole crashing and jumping into defenders didn't fly back then.

I think the softness people reference today isnt so much about the league or the players, but mainly about Lebron’s teammates.
And I frankly have to concede that point as valid.

Critics often label today's game as soft, highlighting perceived changes in its competitive nature. However, it's essential to adapt to evolving trends. Much like the strategic shifts in sports, online gaming also experiences transformations. Because offensive players initiating contact and getting a call is the most bogus aspect of basketball, it's not even real basketball. You'd get laughed out out the park for calling shit like that.

When I hear 'soft' I usually think it's a mentality thing a lot more than a physical one. All the everyone is friends with everyone else, someone is offended all the time, constant drama and stuff like that. Someone's feelings are always hurt it seems. But it's not az much a basketball-related phenomenon as it is a social one in general. Too much coverage of everything, social media and lawyers present everywhere. Narratives are often more important than facts. What went down and how it happened take a backseat and perception becomes everything. Plus star athletes are simply too rich. There was always some gap between them and their fans but it has become a very large gap. With that comes entitlement followed by constant complaining. Physically speaking, players are not soft. They just act like *******.

It's both. A big part of it is the flopping nonsense where you have players getting grazed and then rolling around on the floor like they just got uppercutted by Mike Tyson. Makes them look soft and weak.

This was the most amazing thing to see watching Laker's shaq. Dude was a beast amongst men. I have never seen another center be that violent even on a single possession. It's like a grown man playing against grade school kids.
