This was the season that Yao Ming took 18.3 post-up possessions per game and scored at a 0.97 PPP rate. For 2006-07, that was an incredible combination of volume and efficiency.

For comparison, Shaq that same season used 14.1 post-up possessions per game and scored at a 0.92 PPP rate. RealGM tracking had '98, '00, and '01 Playoff Shaq at 17.6 post-up possessions per game at a 0.98 PPP rate. Obviously, like Dwight (13.1 post-up possessions per game at a 0.93 PPP rate in 2011) his free-throw shooting hurt his post-up PPP.

Yeah.

With better three point shooting today I guess he probably would end up passing more of those shots off, which might raise his real effectiveness despite lowering his point totals. Of course many fans would see the diminished point totals and assume he's just a worse player today.

Which, practically speaking he might be, due to the increased pace of play and his lumbering nature. He was a good passer which would increase his value in today's game, and he probably could have been as good as most centers today as a three point shooter if he worked on it as much as they do, so in theory his skillset might translate to being even better today, but Im not sure his body could take the faster pace and the back and forth between running from the perimeter to the post and vice versa on numerous possessions.

big assumption that he would have been able to shoot the 3. He showed no ability to shoot very far from the basket since he didn't need to

Plenty of guys who ended their career as the pace was spiking (Marc Gasol etc) and hadnt played outside the post before made that transition. Anthony Davis didnt start his career taking threes. Even Dwight's out there in Taiwan somewhere taking threes right now.

Yao was a good enough midrange shooter it's fair to assume he'd shoot at least league average for centers today if he came up in an era that valued it.

If a guy had ZERO offensive game outside lobs and putbacks, then yeah it'd be fair to assume he'd never develop that skill.

Do you know anyone like that?

thought you were talking Shaq. Yao I could see shooting 3's for sure. Like Shaq he would have had issues guarding in space though

That last pass was underrated. Like they said w/ Shaq in PHX, the straight running is not what gets you, it's the lateral movement. He might get exposed on a lot of pnrs but who is stopping his little fade shot?

He could def wet threes, but I dunno if you'd want him to. Putting him in the corner would be a recipe for an inbounds fast break haha. Have to tell him to shoot it really high so he could start running back on D. From the top though like Porzingis like 3, he would prol be bodybags.
