View Full Version : Why are teams playing the same starting lineups against every opponent?

I can see why 2-3 players are untouchable in starting lineups but why all five? I thing I would:

A) experiment more in live (i.e.: not training camp or practice) situations
B) purposefully change some parts of my lineup depending on the opponent

Why do you think we are seeing so little of this?

Most people need clearly defined roles and consistency to play well.

Also, what's being accomplished with changing the starting lineup? If I change Mike Conley with his backup every other game, what's that really gonna change?

Experiment is usually for CP in Warriors or Westbrook in Lakers/Clippers situation.

For the same reason you do it during the game if a setup doesn't really work. I'm sure I'd play a different lineup vs. the Wolves than I would vs. the Mavs.

If you have the lineup.

In soccer it happens all the time even at the highest of levels. And you can't even put someone back in once you took them off. Professionals understand this and actually are fighting for starting spots. (Okay, if you are Messi or a goalkeeper you usually don't. But at least a quarter/third of the team is constantly changing depending on playing form and the opponent.

soccer doesn't have a bench either right? The guys that start play the whole time? Not a good comparison

Nope. Soccer has a long bench. Lots of in-game tactics, too.
