What's your definition of a superstar in the NBA?

What truly separates being a superstar from being a star?

I think the superstar status comes with off the court status as well as being one of the best on the court. Larger than life guys. LeBron, Curry, Durant are really the only guys I look at as true NBA superstars. CP3 when he was younger imo.

A player that fills the arena, and sells a lot of merchandise rather than just filling up the stat sheet.

Beal and SGA despite averaging 30 in recent years are not superstars. The casual fan from other cities has no clue who they are, and there aren't a ton of fans who mark their calendar when those guys are coming into town.

Typically, the all-star voting will tell you who the superstars are.

all - star at one time every player wanted to be , but it is so saturated that the league never adapted to a larger roster , and
it really became a farce.

but an all-star once titled is titled for life.

a super star is a above and beyond a all-star.
They bring it every night like the all-stars from the late 60's-70's did.

threads about a college or regular player vs an NBA player shows the margin of the big show.

Damian Lillard I have grown to appreciate.
When he was in Portland I thought he was a very good player in super star ralm ...
Now that he is a Buck ... oh my word this dude is truly a professional super star.

A player that is a net positive for his team even in an off night.

Always felt that a superstar has to be famous to those who barely know basketball. You could be an elite player on a bad team but if you dont make the playoffs and perform on the grand stage I wont call you a superstar regardless of how good you are

there is none everyone has their weird criteria

i would say the most widely accepted one is someone who has made all nba first teams and is recognizable player around the country/world, even non sports fans have heard his name or maybe even kinda know who he is.

I would call SGA a young superstar or rising superstar. Not quite there yet but on the cusp.

Superstar doesn't have a singular meaning. For example, 2003 Michael Jordan or 2016 Kobe Bryant could still be said were a basketball superstar despite not being a top player anymore due to their fame or importance. There are also more regional superstar like Yao Ming could be considered an NBA superstar in China or Manu in Argentina. Tim Duncan, despite not being too popular, could be considered a superstar due to his talent and success in the NBA.

1st level is Hall of Famer I don't think the NBA has ever had a non-Hall of Fame Superstar
2nd level they have to be a top 10 player in the league at some point.

I think a superstar is someone who is consistently in MVP contention for a period of time. The thing is, people stay 'superstars' after that period is over, so that makes it hard for some people to understand. So you get superteams of dudes who aren't really superstars anymore. Generally with young guys, there are a lot of them on the cusp, but not many actually become superstars.

yea arguable. Think about that. Luka ****ing arguable. But it's true. It's hard for young guys. They gotta do more for longer. Booker is in his moment now, so we'll see.

Edit: @ list tho Jokic, Giannis, and Embiid are superstars. Embiid is just a bitch lol. There might have been one other dude on there that I think is one, but I forgot already. Oh yeah, Tatum probably is, but he's also a bitch.
