View Full Version : What do you think if all star game is replaced by a week long tournament?

With the success of IST, why not add more tournament?

Eight team captains and a pool of players are voted by the fans. They would each draft a team of 10 players from the pool who would compete in an IST style tournament during the course of a week.

As meaningless as I thought the in-season tournament was, at least those games still counted towards the regular season. How would you even sell this to fans, watch a tournament of exhibition games that hold even less value than the regular season? No thanks :lol

it's an idea that appeals to the hoopheads, it becomes too much 1 on 1 for the casuals

Give LeBron 3 chances at winning a championship each season. :applause:

8 teams and 10 players each seems too extensive for a singular event. I think it I would be more open to it if it were more like a FIBA 3x3 format. Even then everything depends on player interest. You can come up with any crazy format for All Star you want, but if the players don’t buy into it, it will be doomed. And I’m not sure all star weekend is salvageable on that front.

What they should do is offer the players some kind of reward if they win the all-star game, maybe then the game itself wouldn't be players half assing the entire game.

It's a week long, not a singular event. Players buying in is a matter of reward. Say winner get $1M each. $1M reward for a week of playing pick up ball? Who doesn't want that.

Just like IST is replacing meaningless November regular season games, this will be replacing a now meaningless all star game. The stakes are so low at this point.

At best it would be pick up basketball. No team would want a player with any kind of health issue touching something they can't brag about.

If the players were willing a 1 on 1 tournament among Allstars would be cool. Game is 5 points, no threes, grand champion gets 10 mil a champ fighter style belt.

Do you think those guys are going to risk themselves to possible injuries in case they happen to play in them?

Even more games in the load management era? Not happening.

you think if Steph, LeBron, KD, Giannis, Luka, Jokic, Embiid, and Tatum got to pick from a pool of 32 other stars to build 5 man squads to play pickup games to 21 with a finals for enough cash they all take it serious fan interest would be the problem?

Not mattering never made old all star games boring.

Imagine that shit 20 years ago with Kobe, KG, AI, Tmac, Shaq and so on leading groups of 5 against each other. Finals is Shaq, Nash, Peja, Rip, and Kenyon Martin vs Kobe, Yao Ming, Tony Parker, Jermaine O’Neal, and AK47.

Million dollars a player.

Any chance whatever happens isn’t remembered as legendary?

You think Kobe or Shaq wouldn’t wanna win? You think Kmart and Shaq wouldn’t put Parker or Kobe on their ass driving for a layup to win 5 million for their side?

A bigger issue would be Insurance. Players will play way harder in that situation than for an All-Star game. As much as we complained about it years ago, the All-Star game recently has become unwatchable for me. Not unwatchable in that I watch it and don’t like it. I have to turn the channel. It’s embarrassing to see the effort.

That wouldn’t be the case in a pickup tournament for serious money with serious egos.

I don't think we need another tournament I think you could however do a week worth of events

Monday - Rookies Game
Tuesday - Vets vs College Kids
Wednesday - Skills Comp
Thursday - Celebrity Game
Friday - Old Timers Game
Saturday - All-Star Game
Sunday - Hall of Fame

They aren't bringing back the old timers game after Thompson blew out his knee again playing in it

Nah, they already do that for the All-Star game the past 5 seasons. A team captain picks players from a pool of talent.

It would basically be a Drew League game.

A lot of those off-season league games are more competitive than the All-Star game.
