PBL holds rookie draft; Norwood likely top pick

FIL-AM Gabe Norwood is expected to be the biggest draw when the PBL holds its annual Rookie Draft on Sept. 28 at the PBL office in Pasig.

The 6-foot-5 Norwood played for the all-pro Philippine team in the FIBA-Asia Championship in Japan recently and also expressed his wish to play in the coming PBL tournament before joining the PBA next year.

Commissioner Chino Trinidad sees a bumper crop of talents as other Fil-foreign players have signified their interest to join the premier amateur basketball league.

104 players display stuff in PBL Rookie Camp today

People's Journal

September 26, 2007

One hundred four players each dreaming to become a big star someday are expected to show up and display their stuff today when the Philippine Basketball League (PBL) holds its Rookie Camp at The Arena in San Juan.

UAAP and NCAA stars, led by Jervy Cruz of University of Santo Tomas, and several other Fil-foreign players, among them Richard Cole of Cypress College and Amir Mazarei of University of Redlands, are among those who have confirmed their participation in the rookie camp which starts at 9 a.m.

Gabe Norwood, the 6-foot-5 former George Mason University starter in the US NCAA, has also made himself available for the rookie draft slated Friday but he

FOR now, Hapee Toothpaste appears inclined to make Fil-American Gabe Norwood the No. 1 pick when the Philippine Basketball League holds its Rookie Entry Draft today.

Though the former George Mason University star has reportedly inked a lucrative contract to play in Europe, Hapee team manager Bernard Yang is hopeful the 6-foot-5 forward will come back to the country to play for the Cecilio Pedto-owned franchise.

Yang said he had already sent an email to Norwood, detailing his interest in getting him as they are aching to regain their lost glory following a disappointing finish in the last conference.

Norwood suited up for the all-pro Philippine team that participated in the FIBA-Asia Championship last April in Japan. It was also in that tournament where the wiry but athletic Norwood expressed interest in playing in the PBL.

The 6-foot-4 Cruz is the top gun of University of Santo Tomas in the UAAP and also the leading candidate for the MVP plum.

Hapee also has the No. 5 pick following a trade with Harbour Centre last year. Lina Group of Companies, which bought the franchise of Welcoat Paints, owns the No. 2 and 4 picks.

Bachhus is eyeing some players of University of the East who have no teams yet in the league.

The order in the second draft will be Hapee, San Miguel-Magnolia, Toyota Balintawak, LGC, Harbour Centre, Pharex and Bacchus.

Guys, was Gabe Norwood really able to reach the US NCAA Finals against LSU in 2004? If it was true, then who won in the finals? Why does it say in the Internet that North Carolina ended up being the 2004 NCAA champions? I am confused, please enlighten me. Tnx!

PBL season glimmers with college stars

MANILA, Philippines -- A league rookie takes on a veteran crew when the Philippine Basketball League (PBL) First Conference kicks off on Oct. 20 at The Arena in San Juan City.

Newcomer Pharex and San Mig Coffee (formerly San Miguel-Magnolia) will clash at 2 p.m., followed by the 4 p.m. dispute between Toyota Balintawak and Bacchus Energy Drink on the first day of the season opener.

PBL commissioner Chino Trinidad expects “a wide open race for the championship” since the league loaned several of its stars -- including back-to-back Most Valuable Player Jason Castro -- to the Harbour-RP team set to see action in the Southeast Asian Games.
But more standouts are expected to emerge from the new batch of rookies led by 6-foot-5 Fil-Am guard Gabe Norwood and San Beda College’s John Hermida of Hapee, Ateneo de Manila University center Ford Arao of San Mig Coffee, University of the East’s James Martinez of Bacchus and Jose Rizal University’s James Sena of Toyota Balintawak.

“The endearing exploits of some of the finest collegiate players are expected to spill over in the PBL considering that most of them will see action,” said Trinidad.

According to executive director Butch Maniego, the league will also hold a one-week tournament which will pit the Harbour-RP team against a foreign team and other invited squads.

Aside from missing Castro, three-time champion Harbour Centre will have to do without Beau Belga, Jonathan Fernandez and Chad Alonzo, while newcomer Lina Group of Companies also loaned a prized recruit -- UAAP MVP Jervy Cruz of the University of Santo Tomas -- to the national five.

This is the new and improve PBL Website and this site is much better compare to the current PBA site, which is probably one of the worst Basketball site in the internet. The PBL website is interactive and easier to browse their are also plenty of information in this site about the recent things that are happening in the league.

George Mason made it to the Final Four in 2006 and lost to Florida the eventual National champs that year. North Carolina did not win it in 2004, UCONN did. UNC won it in 2005. Norwood never played against LSU. LSU lost to UCLA which lost to Florida in the finals.

Mga laro bukas:

(The Arena, San Juan)
2 n.h. – RP Team vs Bacchus
4 n.h. – San Mig vs Hapee

“Mahirap silang (Medics) kalaban. They are playing without pressure, they are a hardworking team. Kami every game may pressure because we want to make it to the play-offs and win the championship,” sambit ni Roadkings mentor Ariel Vanguardia.

“I told the boys that we are not playing as an All-Star team, we are playing as a national team. Kung sa mga mother teams nila sa PBL, sila ang star player, dito lahat ay role players,” wika ni coach Junel Baculi.

Nagningning ang backcourt ng Nationals, na hindi nakaporma sa 74-83 pagkabigo sa Port Masters noong Martes, kung saan nagsalansan ng pinagsamang 27 puntos sina Jason Castro at Boyet Bautista.

Nalaglag ang Comets, na pinangunahan ni Khiel Misa na may 18 puntos, sa 0-2 kartada.
