I had originally thought that this really didn't matter, just something that would happen in a few blue states and launch a few hissy fits. But I thought about a long shot scenario where it might, that could be the thought process behind some of the people behind this initiative.
If enough states kick Trump off the ballot and Nikki Haley can pull enough more the RNC will have a problem on it's hands. They will have someone that won the nomination process but is definitely not the popular choice of Republicans. Trump absolutely would not go for it quietly. And on the flip side Haley would have the justification to say, "I won the nomination. I'm the nominee." I am not sure about the exact details of their delegate nomination process but I would expect Haley to select delegates her people were sure would not flip. And what would ensue would be an explosion of lawsuits in multiple states and a fight that would severely fracture the party no matter who won it in the end. The RNC would have to either disenfranchise some of their own voters to nominate Trump or piss off the majority of their voters to keep Haley. Neither option being a good one heading into the general election.
I don't believe enough blue states will do this to give Haley the win but that is the one way I can see where this might just matter.

No. I am literally not a Democrat. I don't donate money or vote in their primary. Unlike you and a few others I understand what political parties are, which is a business that in this case will be selecting a nominee. Do you know what a superdelegate is? Both major parties have them. They are voted on by no one. In the republican side each state has 3. That's 7% of the delegates. If the delegate count is close and in my nightmare for the right scenario those superdelegates would all meet up in a smokey room and pick the nominee. You see the political parties, as businesses, care about looking democratic but if an extreme circumstance comes along they don't have to be. In the long shot scenario I present (and it is a long shot, a lot of states have to do this and they have to survive challenges that will go all the way to the conservative Supreme Court) the Democrat strategist that decided to do this will break his or her arm patting themselves on the back for using the Republicans own system against them.
And yes, they have opened themselves up to having it done to them in return but the candidate on either side that can be attacked for attempting to overturn an election is going to be rare.

I would say the dream scenario is he lose the election first, just so that there are no excuses to be made, and then he gets hit with something like like a 5 year prison sentence. Short enough that he may survive it... but long enough that we aren't totally sure.

Questioning the results is one thing, but trying to illegally overturn it is something else. Sending alternative electors to threaten the legitimacy of the election, trying to force Pence to not certify the few states Trump lost, using his lawyers to throw a shadow on the results (but unable to provide evidence to the courts), trying to pressure Raffesberger (sp) to give him the exact number of votes to alter the results in Georgia, and not willing to ask his supporters to back down from continuing to wreak havoc on the capitol hill until his family begged him to are all authoritarian things no matter how you slice it. Correct me if I'm wrong, but it is the first time in American history when the transition of power was under threat (Trump ofc didn't show up).
Perhaps that is something you should pay attention to if you want a strong democracy. And yes, it would have certainly impacted your life if the laws/leadership had continued to spiral down that path. It impacts all our lives.
