View Full Version : If Embiid didn't successfully bait the refs so much, he'd have to change his game

He's like a peak James Harden.
An incredible talent and an incredible player but it's hard to know just how good he really is because he plays like a clown and has no integrity.
If Embiid played exactly like he does now and the refs stopped falling for it, this is what his play would look like

Biggest guy in the league, most talented scoring big man in the league since arguably O'Neal and he plays like a complete pansy.
He's at almost 12 fta per game for 3 years straight, lol. To put that into perspective, Shaq only averaged more than that once in his entire career. 2001 near the very height of his career and the middle of his three peat and people were intentionally fouling him. Nobody is intentionally fouling Joel.

If you look at that clip, those are 2 plays where he didn't even try to score that both resulted in fast break dunks/layups for the Raptors. That's an 8 point swing. That's the difference between winning and losing the quarter. I can't wait for the playoffs.

Not sure what your point is. In the first play, he didn't get the call. The second play, he appears to be hit on the forearm or hand and also didn't get the call. If anything your video evidence makes the case he should probably get credited with more points per game than he already does.
The first play is an absolute nothing-burger. Every player in the game- Doncic, Curry, whoever it is will have a play where they assume the defender is mobbing them and will put up a shot to get the foul call. It's not unique or uncommon.

Sure but he's not going to win a title playing this way.

And for the record, bdonovan, the first move wasn't a foul, just Embiid flopping.
The second move is a rip through move and the league flat out stated this is not a legit offensive move and will be deemed a no call. Refs still do it for whatever reason but if they were doing their jobs, they wouldn't whistle it ever for anyone.
So yes, Embiid got hit, but he is the one that initiated the contact and the league says it's a no call. If anything it should be called as an offensive foul.

It's a NBA thing, not an Embiid thing. Whether it's Trae or Harden or Embiid or whoever as long as refs are gifting trips to the line there will be guys trying to take advantage of it.

Yes but not all players are looking for the foul this much.
Embiid and Harden are more concerned with selling the idea of a foul than they are in making their shots and this is why they would never win a title as the man despite being arguably the league's best scorers regardless of their antics. Harden might get a title this year as a hanger on, guess we'll see.

I don’t disagree with anything you said, I just find it funny that Harden likely does win a title as the man and knocks off the juggernaut Warriors to boot if CP3 doesn’t get hurt.

Embiid is shooting over 50% on midrange shots which go up in value in the playoffs. I think his issues in the playoffs are at least in part due to health issues and the drama thats surrounded Philly in recent years.

If CP3 couldn't make it through the WCFs what's the chances he makes it through the Finals.
And then it'd basically be Harden and 3pt shooters vs Lebron, Kevin Love, and 3pt shooters. Rockets would probably still lose.

So I’m in Miami till probably early January and considering the Heat/76ers game on Christmas. I’ve never seen Embiid live.

No the rip-through will still get you foul calls. The NBA rules changed so that a no call is if you do the rip-through facing away from the basket or you raise your arms away from the basket. Those are not natural motions (non-basketball-moves). In the Embiid case, he is facing the basket and bring the ball up to shoot towards it. It's legit. It's valid for the ref to call a foul.
To some extent I understand the challenge of making the point you're making. I've faced the same thing in other scenarios. We try to make a case based on a few examples which themselves are not representative. Then again, what do you want? We don't have time to review every single attempted foul bait move that Embiid did and compare it to all the flops Doncic made in order to make an apples to apples comparison.
Best I can say is now that you mentioned it, I'll look out for it next time the Warriors play the 76ers.

He is baiting the basket into his jumpshot going in over 50% of the time.

It's funny that this clip shows how ASS the NBA is haha. Both times, the team has 3 guys back and they are unable to stop a lay up. Dudes on the break running to the 3 point line. Just all around bad basketball. It's pathetic. haha. That stands out to me more than Embiid trying to draw a foul.

I think it's the team doctors that tell him to fall as often as possible, as it is safer for him than trying to land. Not sure if I am typing that correctly, but I heard that somewhere.
