View Full Version : Do you issue a pardon for this obvious act of stat padding?

I’d say as so-called serious fans, we generally oppose blatant stat padding. Just as a general rule. But I’d say there are circumstances we choose to ignore it. Like say, Larry Bird gunning for 60 points to get the Celtics scoring record after Mchale set it with something like 56 or 57 points immediately before that. Or some of the scoring race exploits we have seen at the end of seasons. Even more acceptable are the end of career situations when guys want to put on the show.

there are many reasons players might choose the gun for stats, and they don’t all justify a

reaction.

most do. But not all.

We now have a new case for your review

Tyrese Haliburton had 20 points, 19 assists and no turnovers. There is an account on Twitter suggesting he spent the last five minutes of the game shamelessly assist hunting for the last one.

if you watch it back, he is obviously trying to get an assist, but I don’t know that I would call the effort shameless. He’s always making plays. But there does seem to be an effort to get the ball back to him when it doesn’t work out so he can try again.

Late in the game this happens which should have easily given him the 20th assist

he reacted in a way that removes all doubt what he was doing

he did later get his assist. He was obviously gunning for that assist. But I think this was more like when LeBron was desperately trying to get that 50 point triple double in MSG, but then pretend that he didn’t even know he was near after the game. It’s that padding but it’s not the kind that is so egregious it becomes a life lesson for kids in the crowd and watching at home on how not to behave. It’s not Ricky Davis or Andray Blatche.

I also don’t think I would call it as bad as Rondo on the Celtics when he would occasionally just flat out stop and refuse to take a layup and wait for a teammate he could throw it to.

I’d say this is just casual up the street stat padding. Not cartoonish super villain stat padding. And considering that they won and he did have a great game? And that his teammates seemed to be in on it and not have a problem?

Barring it becoming a pattern? I think I can issue a full pardon and strike it from his record.

Agreed?

If you're winning the game who cares. You can launch a full court three. Shoot free throw with your eyes closed. Flirt with the female ref. Whatever tickles your fancy.

cavs won that one too.

They both still look like douche bags.

Winning helps, but it gets lost in the infamy of such things. I just don’t think this particular case is worthy. A little funny. But not noteworthy from a character, or being a knucklehead perspective.

Giannis' rebound attempt last year, while I agree not quite as egregious as those two, deserves mention too. You have to have an incredible lack of self-awareness/shame to behave like those two did :lol

Blatche literally asked an opponent not to box him out on a free throw. Hes lucky he asked Yi and not someone who would outright mock him for it.

wilt going for 100 in a game that they won by over 20.

i got no problem with that.

they were probably tripling and hacking his ass throughout the final quarter anyway.

Yea, I mean if the game isn't in question... but it goes to show how those sexy stat lines don't really matter. Like damn I was 20-19 with no turnovers. Some hater in the back SHUDA GOT 20 THO. Doing a Kobe and being like yea we good I'm sitting out the rest of the game is prol the right thing to do.

He can't say shoot it when he shoulda shot it tho haha. But yea I don't think if I was playing I would even know my stats if I had that many assists, and I would honestly not want anyone telling me my stats cuz it would **** with my head. YO DOOD U BOUT TO GET 20/20. I'd def know I didn't have a turn over, and I'd probably try to protect that. That's stat padding, too, tho. I think people talking about stat padding are generally being assholes. Like you said Larry being like what's the scoring record in this arena. It's cool, reminds me of playing bball video games, you come out like you are gonna score 50 and if the team adjusts, then you adjust. If they don't you keep goin.

But one would think at some point before 19 he would have been trying to get more assists, you know? Again: trying to protect that turn over is the same thing.

I remember a game of the Orlando magic where they had 0 turn overs and then put their bench in and some bum turned it over near the end. It's like yoooou mother****er.

to be honest to me i think it goes with the territory of being a big time guy, similar to how they get calls others dont

when you are that good you have earned the right to pad it up a little, as long as you are keeping it within reason and not being egregious with ricky davis type stuff and turning the game into a mockery. most of the stars “get it” in those terms.

kinda boils down to having respect for the game. what andray and ricky davis did wasn’t doing that.

He had 22 points and 23 assists last night. I’m surprised there’s no topic on it. Back to back 20/20. Tied the franchise record(I think it might be Jamaal Tinsley record not Mark Jackson’s). He had this to say after the game:

"I didn't know 23 was the franchise record otherwise I would've hunted to get 24," Haliburton said. "Assists don't happen without guys making shots. ... Guys have to make shots for me to get assists and we're doing that at a high clip right now."

Im fine with that. If that’s the approach that gets his team going. And it’s not like he’s lying about it like some do.

Saw Russ grab like 20 rebounds in his final game of the season to average a triple double and then after the game he was like huh? That's not what I was trying to do :lol

That being said, Hailburton ain't winning shit with that gimmick they're playing. They don't play any D.

Giannis holds a ton of records , and when he played the pacers , he was sitting for the last 2+ minutes when the coaches realized he was 4 points away from breaking the Bucks all time scoring for a game.
They asked him to go into the game and break the record.

Is that stat padding ???

Stat padding to get a record or just stat padding to up your stats?
Almost the same but totally different.
