Phil Jackson on Kobe Bryant’s all nba defensive team selection. Take Phil Jackson's words: “Kobe's defense, to be accurate, has faltered in recent years, despite his presence on the league's all-defensive team. The voters have been seduced by his remarkable athleticism and spectacular steals, but he hasn't played sound, fundamental. 2011 article.

Afro Kobe was a phenomenal defensive player but once Kobe became the no. 1 scoring option of the Lakers. His defensive skills diminished. He was getting voted because of his reputation.

Rightfully deserved he was top 5 in defensive win shares. Anyway all defensive player is a popularity voting guys like Ron Harper and Clyde Drexler were never selected in the sll nba defensive team.

Drexler was never considered a great defender. Harper wasn't until he played for the Bulls as a role player

Harper was considered a good defender when he was on Cleveland when he still had pretty decent athleticism.

No, they weren’t, he had some great highlight chase down blocks that season, but he benefited from playing with a really quality group of defensive role players, and Mike Brown’s defensive minded strategy. It elevated his status immensely.

LeBron James has never been particularly a good defender for the vast majority of his career.

He had three seasons where he was a high-end defender. And it’s no coincidence it came with amazing defensive role players again, an amazing defensive system again, and this time he played with a fellow top three player and MVP caliber player in D-Wade and a franchise caliber PF who was a very good defender in his own right so that he could conserve more energy at various points in the game to give more of a consistent effort defensively.

LeBron James has been an average to serviceable to eventually a putrid defender since 2014. That would require actually watching the games, understanding what you’re watching, and not being a stan to recognize that.

OP is a fking idiot who can't even get his shit right.

You read a 2011 Bleacher Report article (back when BR was doing anything for clickbait to grow their dogshit website, the article is written by an amateur). The actual Phil Jackson quote is from his 2004 book, when him and Kobe hated each other. The article you read even gave you the book title, and you could have at least made an effort to look up when that book was released before you posted this garbage.

At hit peak, when he put in the efffort, LeBron was a good man defender and an elite help defender. But it's shocking to me that a guy with his bbiq and athleticism wasn't a better man defender(when actually trying in his prime).

He shut down Rose, Parker, Paul George, and Pierce at various times.

Those guys have a few MVP/FMVP's between em. He was always the one guarding them in crunch time.

What more can a King do? It's not his fault Wade decided to get lit up by Terry and Barea in 2011.

Size/weight. Athletic as he was, it's impossible for a guy carrying that much weight to stop on a dime and move like a guy 50 pounds less would. All the best SF man defenders of recent times (Bowen, Prince, AK47) were long and skinny. Kawhi is an exception but even he is 30 pounds lighter than Bron.

He could do it in stretches but a guy that big can't shut down a small quick dude over an entire game. The energy expenditure is too much.

Everyone knows Kobe didn't deserve half of his all-nba D awards.

Let's be real, all-nba defensive teams are by far the most "reputation-based" awards that are voted on.

Half is going way too fking far.

If we're being honest, most of the greats who had a lot of those selections got a few off reputation. Also, he played SG so it's not like there were that many lockdown defenders at guard who deserved a spot over him. Even the shitty article OP quoted cried about Artest not being on All-D team, but Artest was a forward so KB's selection had no impact on him.

Also, the coaches used to vote on the All-D teams back then. If KB was so bad on D like people here claim, why would they vote for him every year? And yeah, that award is pretty meaningless anyway.

You get my point though. Kobe was twice the defender in the beginning of the 2000s compared to the end of the decade, but he was still getting the all-nba nod :lol. At least Jordan was leading the NBA in steals multiple times,
