There's a distinction to make between best performers and best players. Although there is a difference in terms of consistent greatness and fluke runs, that's NOT where the bulk of the difference lies. I'm referring to guys coasting or resting vs guys going balls out. Guys like KD and especially Kawhi are going to be coasting and are more worried about being ready come playoffs. Whereas young guys like Haliburton or Shai are wanting to prove themselves as emerging superstars.
