View Full Version : Does Trae Young to the Lakers make sense?

I see the Hawks as sellers and I think their black hole on that roster is Trae Young. Rumors are already swirling around Murray being shopped around and I'm wondering, why would the Hawks stop at Murray and keep Young? The haul of picks they can get for trading away Murray and Young would be huge.
But does it make sense for Los Angeles? Not that I care about Lebron's success, but I'm having a hard time finding a team where Trae Young would actually help the team without that team already having studs on it.
He's been kinda erratic this year. That's a big contract too. How would that work?

Lakers are in a weird position because AD is clearly not going to be a championship #1 after Lebron is gone. So if they bring in someone on a long max contract it kinda has to be someone capable of being Lebron's successor. Which limits the field to say the least. AD and Trae Young with a bunch of average players AT BEST around them is not a winning group.
That's why I think Irving makes the most sense if they can get him. A guy on a shorter deal they wont be heavily committed to if Lebron moves on after this year or next year. Or someone like Bojan who gives them shooting on the wing while also being on a more modest deal.
I dont think an all-star on a max deal is the move, unless it's a Top 5-ish guy, which isnt happening.

How does LA get Young without trading James or Davis? No other assets make sense for Atlanta.

More smooth brain topics focused on LA getting a star player despite having no 1st round picks to trade. What's new?
If Siakam on an expiring contract that can leave as an unrestricted free agent is worth 3 firsts, what is Trae worth as a 25 yr old player locked in for 4 years? Surely at least 3 firsts, right?
Nope. He's worth Russell and Hachimura.:facepalm

If Lakers are not thinking about Luka to replace Lebron, then they're not doing their due dilligence.
Luka and AD would be spectacular.

The Mavs would not trade Doncic for any current combination of Laker players INCLUDING Davis, much less some kind of package that doesnt.

This looks like a trade where everyone loses.

depends on the picks. Murray to the Knicks looks good. Get rid of Fournier's contract and just give up 2 1sts and Grimes? Prince expiring. Griffin 20 with upside. They get better in the short term for sure. I thought Murray or Shai were the guys they should have been going at 2 summers ago when they wanted Mitchell next to Brunson.
Unprotected 1st from the Lakers in a couple years could be great. Trae Young leads one of the worst teams in the league right now. Crutch hurt. Lebron retired. Have fun Lakers fans!
Hawks get picks. Drop some money off their cap sheet. Some young guys and break a huge contract into smaller ones

Bronny should get drafted by the hawks first before they trade him there lmao.

Darvin Ham would probably have Trae playing power forward.

What? Lakers can trade 2029 frp.
But it's obviously not enough for Trae.
Lakers should target Dejounte Murray. I wouldn't trade Reaves tho for Murray unless if we can get more in return or have a secondary trade lined up.
I would do this:
Lakers get Murray.
Hawks get Reaves & 2 pick swaps both from Lakers.
3rd team gets Capela. 3rd team sends Hawks something for Capela.
Then Lakers do a 2nd trade with Rui+Dlo+FRP. I think I wouldn't mind LaVine.
Murray/Lavine/Prince/Lebron/AD with Wood, Vanderbilt, Hayes, Max, Vincent off the bench. We still have buyout candidate slot.
Or you can combine it into something like this:

https://www.espn.com/nba/tradeMachine?tradeId=yqcqth3x
w/ Lakers FRP going to Chicago, and 2 Lakers pick swaps to Atlanta. Washington can also send a 3rd future swap to Atlanta.

Hawks gave up 3 1sts for Murray and he is wanted by others. Good luck with that

They are not getting 3 FRPs. They requested 2, and I think it's a hard press.
3 pick swaps with Reaves, JHS (who was frp), and dumping Capela in the process is reasonable. Gafford isn't a bad center for much cheaper, and Delon Wright's expiring contract.
Could possibly swap Gafford with Michael Bagley as well. But in that case, Washington wouldn't offer a swap.
I think Knicks and the Lakers are the only teams in play for Murray anyways from everything I read. Maybe Miami if they offer Herro.

With who? Middleton? That's one way it works. And Milwaukee's FRP on top.
Or Lopez, but Milwaukee would be foolish to give up Lopez.
Both players are on the old side with multiple years on contract. Why would Atlanta as a rebuilding team do it?

It's tough to say what the Lakers should do.
