Lenny Wilkens might have had the strangest season of not only his career, but of anyone in league history.
This is his 8th season, all with the St Louis Hawks. This his his best season to date. He's named an All-Star for the 5th time in his career. He leads the Hawks to the 2nd best record in the league that season with 56 wins (Only Wilts Sixers were better.)
That 56 win mark was the best in franchise history. Even better than when Bob Pettit was playing.
He's 2nd in MVP voting behind Wilt Chamberlain.
You would think 2nd best record in league and 2nd in MVP voting he'd earn All-NBA team honors.
He's not selected 1st (or 2nd team) for that mater. Oscar Robertson and Dave Bing make 1st team. Robertson and Bing win 39 and 40 games that season. Hal Greer and Jerry West are selected to the 2nd team. Jerry West only played 51 games that season. Dave Bing was in his 2nd season. Everyone else were veterans.
-Lenny Wikens avg 20/8/5 on 44%fg and 56 wins. TS. 53%
-Oscar Robertson avg 29/10/6 on 50%fg and 39 wins. (led league in points, assist and free throw %) TS. 59%
-Dave Bing avg 27/6/5 on 44%fg and 40 wins. TS. 49%
-Hal Greer avg 24/5/5 on 48%fg and 62 wins TS. 53%
-Jerry West avg 26/6/6 on 51%fg and 52 wins. (Played 51 games) TS. 59%
After Lenny Wilkens gives the Hawks the best record they've ever had, he gets traded in the 68 off-season to 2 year franchise Seattle Sonics for freaking Walt Hazzard.
The disrespect.
