View Full Version : Aside from Horford/Gasol, which NBA big (from any era) would best defend Joel Embiid?

I feel like Tim Duncan would be the perfect Embiid defender. You need a guy who's long, has a strong base, and stays down, and keeps in front. Keeps his arms up and times his contests well. Those are qualities Horford and Gasol share with TD.

Nate Thurmond would be another option. Although he had a tendency to keep his arms down and surprise people. I feel like Embiid would be too good at timing his shot. Wemby got caught out several times today and Thurmond has a similar arm length.

Bucks seems to contain him best these past couple regular seasons.

All time of course the Hakeems and Robinsons of the world.

Rodman would absolutely mind**** today’s players.

Perkins used to defend Dwight pretty well in their playoff matchups. He could probably do something similar with Embiid, at least in the post.

Once Embiid were to stretch it out to the 3 point line, Perk would be cooked.

If I could choose anyone, it'd be Hakeem.

Ben Wallace, Rodman, Duncan are the correct answers here.

I actually think Rodman would get mindfucced himself. He'd be called for so many whistles. Half his bag of tricks goes out the window. And then all that remains vs Embiid is a weight difference.

If you think Embiid is most dangerous as a 3pt shooter, I don't know what to say to you.

To me, it is clear he's most dangerous from 15ft in where Duncan has the defensive fundamentals, strength, length, and composure to not fall apart as Embiid does his Troel act.

Embiid’s toughest two defensive opponents:

1. Lebron James
2. The second round

Prime Garnett had the mobility, motor and length to seriously disrupt his midrange game.

I feel as if most the 90s centers would match up favorably with Embiid.

Ewing, Duncan, Hakeem, Shaq, Mourning, Rik Smits, Mutombo.

Embiid is not very quick, but he is tall and strong, and most dangerous from midrange. He reminds me the most of Ewing.

But Embiid settles enough to not fully punish Garnett’s very light frame/lack-of-strength defending iso post.

Agreed. You need someone who is strong and long enough and mobile enough. And has good technique and instincts. Those are the types (Horford, Gasol) that have caused him issues.

Would love to see Anthony Mason or Karl Malone get a shot at him. Agile and strong bigs who could guard him in the post or from the perimeter.

Malone was damn strong. Guarded prime Shaq in the post in '97 and '98. That Utah team was perfectly constructed to exploit Shaq. Throw Malone and Ostertag at Shaq on defense; cook him on offense with the pick and roll. Portland in 2000 had similar qualities.

I remember reading an article wherein it said that Mason was the only guy who could move Shaq out of the way. I figured it probably was because of the way Mason posted up guys, he was backing them down with hits that were borderline offensive fouls.
