View Full Version : 75% of Millionaires and Billionaires support higher taxes on the wealthy

Nearly three quarters of millionaires polled in G20 countries support higher taxes on wealth, over half think extreme wealth is a “threat to democracy” (https://www.oxfam.org/en/press-releases/nearly-three-quarters-millionaires-polled-g20-countries-support-higher-taxes-wealth#:~:text=A%20staggering%20new%20poll%20has,E conomic%20Forum%20in%20Davos%2C%20Switzerland.)

Polling comes as 260 millionaires and billionaires sign new letter, directed at political leaders attending the World Economic Forum in Davos, saying they would be “Proud To Pay More” in taxes.

A staggering new poll has revealed that support for higher taxes on wealth is popular with dollar millionaires from across G20 countries. It comes as 260 millionaires and billionaires have signed a new letter demanding world leaders increase their taxes, to coincide with the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland. The polling is part of the “Proud to Pay More” report, published alongside the letter, which profiles some of the world’s wealthiest people on why they support higher taxes on themselves.

The survey, conducted by Survation on behalf of Patriotic Millionaires, polled over 2,300 respondents from G20 countries who hold more than $1 million in investable assets, excluding their homes —making them the richest five percent and higher. Key findings include:

74 percent support higher taxes on wealth to help address the cost of living crisis and improve public services.
75 percent support the introduction of a 2 percent wealth tax on billionaires, as proposed by the EU Tax Observatory in October 2023.
58 percent support the introduction of a 2 percent wealth tax for people with more than $10 million.
72 percent think that extreme wealth helps buy political influence.
54 percent think that extreme wealth is a threat to democracy.

The polling also found:

70 percent think the economy would be stronger if we increased taxes on extreme wealth to invest in public services and national infrastructure.
66 percent of people with $1 million or more would support higher taxes on themselves if they were used to invest in public services and stronger national infrastructure.
57 percent believe that extreme wealth prevents others from improving their living standards and hinders social mobility.
53 percent think that extreme wealth exacerbates climate change.

It’s very easy to check a box in a poll :lol

We will see when the time comes (I’m not holding my breath) if they are so eager to walk the walk

Also…what’s stopping them right now? At that conference how much money do you think was in the room? If they really thought they all need to be taxed more couldn’t they form a fund to donate or run their own programs? Hopefully more efficient than federal programs as well.

I always tell polls the opposite of my actual feelings.

I am in 100% agreement in everything Biden has done. I believe there are infinite number of genders that can simultaneously identify as anything.

I believe the world is better with Biden in charge despite the wars and deaths going on.

I am voting for Biden and hopefully a more colorful and tranny VP.

How does a restaurant or store sustain itself if it isn't profitable?

What does that have to do with anything? Why can't you answer the question and support your own argument?

Tell me how a business that relies on "voluntary donations" continues to operate when the operating costs exceed the amount in donations. Tell me how you can guarantee that there will always be a surplus. Apply this logic to a restaurant for example.

Uh, the food court makes up a fractional portion of Costco's business. They don't mind operating on slim margins on the food court items because it brings more consumers into the store, which is how their real money is made. Plus all of their items are made in house using their own Kirkland products.

Costco is actually very charitable, well run company. I used to work there back in the day during college. They pay their employees very well all things considered. But if the food court was a standalone restaurant, there is no chance in hell they could afford to price their items that low.

Lol, nothing is being subsidized. It's a marketing strategy. They also give free samples, are those subsidized too? You think they give away samples for their health? No, they're confident that if they give away samples more people are going to buy the product. The free samples, the food court... it serves the larger business.

I love Costco. I think they're a great company. But if they weren't trying to sell you wholesale goods, they wouldn't be interested in selling cheap hot dogs. They couldn't afford to.

But by all means, if you have a genius idea on how to accomplish this, I am all ears.

So entities are able to produce shit at low costs and almost free?

You openly admit a company could provide free stuff?

But only does so because it will reap them more profit in some sort of black magick capitalist kind of twist?

Because tax the rich is a political message... you are playing tribal politics.

Here is one current example... The expanded child tax credit expired few years ago. Researchers from any source you want to pull concluded the expanded credit markedly reduced the child poverty rate. Google it if you do not believe me. Now the expanded tax credit is being sent to congress attached to a bunch of unrelated tax breaks and revisions.

I do not care whether billionaires are taxed more because more often than not I am going to lose in the long run. I am going to lose some benefit I already had to trade back for unwinding this later. Government serves the politician's interest several times before it considers the public. The people in these polls are the constituents that matter 100x more to lawmakers than me or you. They know that. They know they can take as bold and radical opinion as they want when this kind of proposal has no chance of passing as a singular act.

For the most part those wanting to spread the wealth are thinking with their own needs in mind, and those fighting for Jeff Bezos to have more billions are sheep to him and their tribe.

This topic should be a no brainer for anyone who isn't rich. Hell apparently even the wealthy agree. There has been a massive paradigm shift, the elite wealthy have become much more wealthy while everyone else has remained stagnate. It's time to tip the scales a bit.

If nobody earning under $100k has to pay taxes, that means the government would have to raise taxes exponentially on those that do. That means someone earning $130k could theoretically net less income than someone earning $95k, which is fukking retarded.

Also, only around 15% of U.S. population earns over $100k to begin with. It would be literally impossible for them to shoulder the tax burden for the entire population of over 300 million americans.

Yeah that is kind of my point. Less than 100K is nothing, those people need their money. Let the 20% who hold all the countries cash pay income tax. Keep in mind income tax isn't all tax, there is state tax, property tax, and sales tax. So even the ones making nothing are would still be paying in some form. Something like 80 percent of the wealth in USA is in the hands of top 10 percent of the nation. The top 1 percent has more wealth than the bottom 50 percent combined. And it's actually getting worse. That is when capitalism begins to fall apart when we reach those extremes. It's crony capitalism.

Sorry, don't need more tax cuts for the rich.

Bill Gates

Exactly! This is natural evolution of capitalism. Businesses have to become more and more efficient in order to compete with each other. In the process of becoming more efficient over time the workers have to do more with less income.

When it evolves to this level, at least small amounts of redistribution of wealth must happen.

The United States has always had degrees of socialism implemented. Now it is time to turn it up another degree. That doesn't mean moving away from capitalism, and the right will go full on black and white with declare we are communist. It just means turning the dial a bit more.

Eventually, a century or two down the road. There will be no choice but to go full on communist as AI and robots will have replaced the human work force entirely. Right now we are in the very early stages of that evolution in society.

So if you take away the tax liabilities for making less than 100k, the deficit is paid by the middle class and the upper 1% huh?

Who is going to be affected by this more, the middle class making 100-300k or the 1%-class? This sounds like more bullshit to get rid of the middle class.

What needs to happen is the tax bracket needs to be elongated. There is no reason why the brackets need to stop at 37% at 750K for married couples.

to even say making 100k is a status symbol tells everyone you are either a retarded kid and/or at poverty level.

Sure, Bill Gates might say don't tax me tax Musk and Bezos instead and the other two would say the opposite, which is why a third party needs to step in to enforce it.

It's so ridiculously easy to make money when you're up there.

Hedgefund creates several vc's, vc goes to a developing nation with laxed regulations and invests in a startup bringing in a large amount of local investors, local investors who are on board with the vc pull their investments at a profit while the other investors get ****ed, vc takes a loss which is the hedgefund's loss so no taxes- not only no taxes, handouts even, the 'local investors' who made the profits are really shell companies of the hedgefund partners and investors and reinvest the money back in the hedgefund. Rinse and repeat while we destroy developing nations.

That's straight-up crony capitalism that everyone should be against, regardless of party or class. I'm sure schemes like that happen within developed countries too. Corporations do whatever they can to maximize profit even if it means screwing over everyone else.

Corporations are afforded benefits that we on the outside can only dream of. This is why I have a huge problem with middle-class and lower-class numbnuts from the Republican party pushing for tax cuts for the wealthy. They are cheering to erase themselves for rich corporate bastards who will trample on the bottom 99% the first chance they get. The way companies like Apple are run is not the American dream. It's a stomping over the American dream.

The VC i used to work for got uprooted and removed from Shanghai like the parasite it is by Xi's administration and was slapped down real hard in Skorea. Actual 1st world countries with regulations(nordic countries, Germany, France. NZ etc) don't even entertain the idea of american foreign investment in that sense. Why do you think the rest of the world hates us so much? An ideal candidate would be something like Venezuela. Rich natural resources like oil that we can put back into the us economy via futures. The problem with things like that is it becomes like the Afghanistan pullout once you have your hands in it; it has to end sooner or later and it's really messy when it does. You saw what happened in Venezuela in real time when we put in the sanctions to restrict their access to us debt and equity markets. It was going to be messy no matter what like I said, but we literally chose the messiest way to do it. Then we propagandize it as "oh it was the socialism, really. Not a corrupt dictator selling us his country piece by piece like a chop shop".

So 80% of Americans should not pay any income tax?

Or in other words, 20% of americans should pay all the income tax huh?

You think 100K somehow means you've made it? 100K is nothing
Meltdown. Any amount, even if it reaches millions or billions, wouldn't satisfy a super depressed hillbilly redneck like you regardless.

if 75% of millionaires and billionaires truly wanted to be taxed at higher rates, it would be happening.

Should retitle: 75% of millionaires and billionaires want every other millionaire/ billionaire to be taxed at higher rates.
