I will say it's pretty impressive he did this on a night he was clearly trying to do it, motivated by the fan he had ejected at another arena the night previous. The timing of this was not a coincidence, he was out to make a point to the fan he had booted. And he did it.

Cranking it up after being slighted is something MJ was famous for, and in fact so was former world chess champion Garry Kasparov.

Sure you cant expend energy breaking records against the best of the best every night, but if a guy brought a little home prep to a game that caught Garry by surprise when he was just expecting a regular game, and you got a big win that made headlines and impugned his status as the best... he was known to show up the next game absolutely locked and loaded and just win on demand even against the world's top players (for those that dont know, winning is not 'common' in chess, the most typical outcome of a given game is a draw). One of his successors Carlsen is also well known for this, that when he wants to make a specific point by massacring someone, even players that are supposed to be near his caliber, he can almost do it at will if he gets that extra little bit of adrenaline involved.

It's a real lesson in poking the bear. We saw Dillon Brooks learn that lesson the hard way last year against LeGOAT.

It's pretty incredible to see guys have nights like this and realize they dont do it all the time mainly because it's just too emotionally draining to attempt over and over. But when you decide to pour fuel on their fire?? They can just put the rest of the world's best to bed, on demand.

I think it was more about making the MVP sit down and show who is boss.

Or it could've been about showing Atlanta their mistake in trading him.

While I dont think that had anything to do with it, it is an interesting side note I’d forgotten all about.
