Very nice! Center position + point guard that can pass = a good time.

Most overrated player pre-draft

20% win record for the spurs...

Just to put things in perspective, Orlando pre-shaq 21/82 win ratio, rookie year 45/82

Shaq was a couple years older and the NCAA at that time was probably better competition than the French league is now. Obviously Shaq had an NBA body already too

Shaq was 9 months older than Wemby when he joined the NBA. A more realistic player similarity is Paolo Banchero. Let's cross our fingers he can do what Paolo is doing

give me a reason the Spurs would want to win 40 games this season instead of 20. How would that serve them?

Even if they aren’t enamored with a particular prospect, it’s better to get the high pics and trade down for more. Given the choice between a terrible record and a mediocre but hopeless one? While trying to put pieces around my new star?

trying to win just doesn’t seem rational. The magic got lucky winning the lottery back to back years at 66 to 1 odds. But those are slot machine odds not something to anticipate. He’s quite a bit better than anybody I saw seriously predicting he would be as a rookie. People were on here talking about how bad he looked in France and how he wouldn’t be able to do anything in the NBA till he got stronger and a lot more polished.

He was supposed to be generational, but not on day one. He came out the gate of borderline defensive player of the year type guy who can also score. I didn’t think he’d be that for a minute. I certainly didn’t expect the Spurs to start winning and see no good reason they should be trying

can't really compare guys that played 3 years of college 30 years ago to guys that played 1 or none or in another part of the world today. He's one of the top couple rookies this year and most importantly he's still healthy so we don't have to put him with Oden, Sampson, Bowie, Walton, Yao, Daugherty etc. yet anyway

Yeah i don't get the overrated label at all. The way he's played this last month is about as good as the Spurs could hope for.

Pasch said he heard that Walton was “in the mix” to play Chewbacca. Here is what Walton said (and note that the transcription reflects the way the former NBA big man pronounced the name of the Wookiee): “No. I heard that. Chewbacca is modeled after me. […] George Lucas is all cool as they get and I remember the night that George and Kareem and Bill Russell and me, we were all up in San Francisco at a big fundraiser for the Martin Luther King memorial. […] I auditioned for Chewbacca and they said no but we’re going to model the character after you.” (https://ftw.usatoday.com/2024/02/bill-walton-chewbacca-star-wars-george-lucas-alaskan-malamute-dog)

You would think that. And yet for some reason his teammates seem to have a hard time finding him. Case in point, the final possesion vs the pelicans.

None of Wemby's teammates are natural passers/playmakers outside of Tre Jones(who would be a backup PG on every other team in the league). Ball hogging/selfishness is also a problem with these youngsters feeling jealous that they're no longer top priority for the team long term. The Pelicans game is great example of Vassell choosing to take the final shot himself instead of making the pass to Wemby(as drawn up by Pop).

Pop would have shut that shit down twenty years ago and put Devin in the doghouse. Now? The washed up old man will probably tell him to memorize the Constitution and that basketball is not that important in the grand scheme of things so it's not worth going to the trouble of improving your game.
