In '86 teams took an average of 3 three points shoots per game. Today teams take 35 three points shoots per game. That is a 12 fold increase.

So you might say 'Well no wonder they score so much today, they take an assload of threes.'

But there's only a four point difference in scoring average from 86. They were scoring 110 per game then, today they're scoring 114.

In fact scoring average was quite consistent from 78 to 88, averaging between 109 and 111 per game each year for ten straight years straight. From 88 to 93 it averaged about a one point drop per season, then in 94 it suddenly plummeted by 4 points and remained depressed for the remainder of the 90s and into the 00s.

Everyone makes a big deal about the current scoring, but maybe this is really the norm and it just seems weird because the 90s and 00s was artificially depressed for some reason. Maybe everyone trying to copy MJ led to a lot of bad shots and suspect team play. Maybe it was Lebron who rescued the league and got things back onto a high-IQ team oriented footing.

Just spitballin, that's all. Whatchu guys think?

Do you know how an old Lion will muster up all its remaining strength for one final attack on the young Lion so that it can go “ha-ha-ha!” before leaving the pride…?
