The Federal Reserve is looking for steady, reliable signs that inflation is simmering down before it cuts interest rates this year. So far, 2024 has not delivered.
Data released by the Bureau of Labor Statistics on Tuesday showed prices rose 3.2 percent over last year, slightly outpacing forecasts of 3.1 percent. Prices also rose 0.4 percent in February over the previous month — in line with expectations, but still hotter than economists would like to see.
Those top-line figures represent just a snippet of a bigger economic story. But they also added a dose of uncertainty about whether the Fed’s inflation fight is getting tougher after 2023’s remarkable progress. Markets dipped slightly into the red shortly after Tuesday’s open.

When January’s inflation report came in hotter than expected, Fed watchers and policymakers were quick to cite seasonal glitches and other data quirks that often come with the start of the year. But February data is supposed to be more reliable, prompting fresh questions about whether this is simply a bump in the road, or the beginning of a new trend.
“This debate about ‘oh, was January special?’ I think that has now been settled. January is not special,” said Torsten Slok, partner and chief economist at Apollo. “This is the reality.”

Inflation was NEVER down despite biden's claims of record low unemployment, record low inflation, record high stock market.
Use gold as the best indicator. Gold prices are based on extraction. The price goes up as costs of extraction goes up. Thats why it always goes up over the years. Gold is now $2200 when it was $1600 during trump

Why would the fed try to fight inflation? Inflation is great for the fed, they get to print more money and they put the US govt that much deeper into debt

"I'm scared!" or "The Redcoats are coming!" are common phrases of fear, apprehension, or caution. Certainly not phrases of excitement and joy. But then again, if you're in a state of fear or apprehension, you could be in a state of excitement. But not in a good way of course.

The thing that Biden apologists dont seem to understand about inflation is that it is cumulative.
Even if inflation is just 3% today, that does nothing to undo the massive price increases that started in 2020... saying that inflation is only 3% right now is not particularly meaningful considering that this is a 3% increase on prices that were already massively inflated over the past few years.

Regardless, just using common sense cutting taxes for the wealthy while increasing deficit spending will create a ton of debt and inflation.

Trump flooded the country with free money and it drove up prices. That is the reality of it.
When everyone really does stop buying things like Chewing has? Companies will lower prices.
You guys believe that inflation happened just because Biden is old and that is because you are some of the dumbest people on the internet. Which is why I post in here, to see what this countries dumbest f@#ks are thinking.

The genius above me doesn't realize that people are still buying things, especially groceries, in order to survive. The problem is, average American debt is increasing because they cannot afford these higher prices. Actually buying something like food to feed your family and affording it are two totally different things. But this die-hard purple-haired Lib doesn't understand that. He wants to paint a rosy picture about the economy when wages do not match up to the rise in everyday goods and services.
Rofl this guy lovee dat dere maths instead of real life. Yessssss people got more money, that's how it works when rent, groceries, fuel, utilities, everything for that friggin matter sky rockets while wages stay the same......... That means people have MORE money!

You're the one painting a dishonest picture. Or you have just bought the fake news your camp wants to sell. For poor people (you) it is mostly a case of having the same grocery bill only now you are buying store brand. There are still plenty of very affordable ways to feed yourself. And people who literally can't "survive" on today's prices can get gov issued food stamps. That's free food.

Wage growth has been higher than inflation for months now.

You guys don't even grasp the bare basics. Companies don't raise prices when no one can afford anything. This is how capitalism and supply and demand works.
Trump flooded the country with free money and it drove up prices. That is the reality of it.

Lmao, okay Einsten.
Demand alone doesn't dictate the price of goods. It's supply AND demand. The reason companies are forced to raise prices during an inflated economy is because they're feeling the heat on the supply side. I.E. the cost of doing business.
If these companies were to lose all their customers because prices rose too high, it's not like they can just magically lower the price again and stay afloat. Not if the cost of doing business is also high. At that point the margin of profit won't make any sense for them and they'll just close up shop.
