I am Spanish and the way it works is this. Pau is his name, Gasol is his father's surname and Saez his mother's surname. Actually, we tend to have eight surnames, four from the father's side of the family and four from the mother's side of the family. I suppose it can sound weird for foreigners.:confusedshrug:

The father of his future stage partner Frank Sinatra had similarly used the name 'Marty O'Brien' as a young aspiring prize fighter. Top enforcer for Al Capone, Vincenzo Gibaldi, fought in his youth under the name Battlin' Jack McGurn. Of course when he switched to a career in organized crime he became known as Machine Gun Jack McGurn.

One of my close friends as a kid was named James but his father and grandfather were also James, so the family and everyone else called him by a Scottish nickname that went back in the family. He used the name in school, around town, etc. It was how everyone knew him. Most people didnt even realize his actual name was James.
