Surprised to not see a thread on this... tragic, tragic day. Both the Governor of Maryland and Mayor of Baltimore had to give each other a hug. They're saying they both may have PTSD from having to address the media.
notable lines from the article:
River's 50ft deep and water is 48F
6 people missing but subject to change -- apparently there were people actually fixing potholes in Baltimore (hard to believe) - two rescued
It was travelling 9mph which is excessive
Biden said his government will pay the entire cost of bridge repairs
Just so you are aware, the ship named Dali is flagged in Singapore. Once again, the countries these huge ships are flagged in should be paying the price. This includes the protection from the Houthi's and Somalian pirates.

Beat me to it. And if you look at the video closely, you can see the construction worker vehicles that were still on the bridge that fell into the water as a result.
Think this is a better video:

You forgot to mention that it lost power and so they couldn't stop the ship. Before that happened, they sent out a mayday telling workers to evacuate the bridge. Wasn't anyone's fault if the ship malfunctioned.
It veered directly towards the pylon, followed by a collision with the concrete protection bollard, and moments later, impacted the bridge support. They managed to close off the bridge just in the nick of time, with the final truck safely crossing a mere ten seconds before the collapse.

The best footage thus far.

The very first word of this thread says powerless. Did I ever blame anyone? If you're referring to who pays for it, that's not blame, that's taking responsibility for the clean up. As far as blame goes, lets see and make sure the ship was kept up with maintenance records... I doubt it was considering where it's flagged.
You continue to show us all how stupid you are with every damn post. It's actually pretty remarkable how you do that.

I stand corrected. I didn't know it was flagged for maintenance issues. I would hit the company with the bill.

problem was the bridge pilings.
Other bridges built the same time or similar structures have 2 or more pilings in front of the supports to protect the bridge from hits.
This particular bridge is void of them , and the city should be blamed.
I should mention that the pilings are like 6 or more feet wide of concrete

This is like the most coherent thing you’ve written in years. It’s almost perfect.

How A Container Ship Secures Containers
https://youtu.be/JebcH4_LVEU
Anyway, I haven't looked into this incident in a while, but from what I can remember, a possible reason as to why the ship "turned" into the bridge is because there's a channel to the right of it, and when the ship lost power, the current turned it. When it's on, the captain compensates for it.
Maybe Jasper can chime in, since he seems to have boating experience.
