View Full Version : What can Philly do to get Joel into a conference finals?

Right now he’s the only MVP never to play in a conference finals.

What can Philly do to sort of reduce the burden of leadership and expectations down to a level that Joel can meet? How can they make the job easier for him?

Im rooting for the guy to make it. I think having Maxey under one of his arms now will help, but they still probably need another guy to get under his other arm and help carry him to that promised land. The right formula has to be out there somewhere.

Theres no shame in the weight being too much for him to this point. Marc Gasol, Al Horford, Isiah Hartenstein… these are, you know, decent-ish players. They got the best of him, so be it. But I think it’s Phillys job to make everything as easy as possible for Embiid so that he can get to that conference finals without feeling the anxiety of having to perform really well. They need to give him a lot of psychological support.

What do you guys see as the best way toward that goal?

Morey needs to go get Cade from Detroit and extend the window.

Maxey, Cade have the torch and Embiid can age gracefully.

Sit him all regular season so he's healthy for the playoffs.

Improve his conditioning and/or limit his minutes. He hasn't been remotely healthy for a playoff run in forever now.

Not a single one of his haters will reduce criticism of him if he makes it next year. That’s how it works. If he makes it and loses, he still a loser. We saw years of it with Chris Paul. Then he made it and absolutely no one gave a shit because it’s a ridiculous standard that doesn’t matter.

To me, my criticism of Embiid has mostly been his performance. I'm one of the few people who defends guys like Jerry West & McGrady from slander because most of the time, they actually played extremely well while notoriously losing 8/9 Finals and never getting out of the first round.

You're right, the haters wouldn't even stop after winning a title, but I'd give him credit if he were able to actually match his regular season production in the playoffs, something he's fallen FAR short of the majority of the time.

To me Embiid and Maxey was great this season's playoff. The only reason they lost was Tobias Harris being absolute trash. You can't have your 3rd option playing this bad and expect to win unless you have top tier defense.

Him and tyrese have the talent

Of course embiid just needs to healthy which I don’t know how he can change that around at this point

Morey came out and said they are in win now and looking to acquire players through trade and FA rather than draft

I think they can get the money to work to land paul george

PG has been legit lately and that would be a hell of a big 3.

I would have to look at their books more but they might need to be careful if they go after george

I’ve been thinking more about the new CBA and I think the big 3 format might be outdated

I think a big 2 with a more well rounded rotation is better now.

You used to be able to shorten your bench in the playoffs and figure it out but I think with the increase of pace and injuries we are seeing today, the pendulum has swung back the other way where you really need that extra depth.

He hasn't caught a lucky break once in his career in the Playoffs. That's really what it boils down to. He's faced so many great opponents in the 2nd round and usually it's him or someone on his team that's injured which tilts the series in the opponents' favor. Also, he had to endure Bum Simmons for all those years who cost him at least one Conference Finals, probably two with how Bum Simmons played against Toronto as well.

He'd easily have made the ECF & Finals this year if his team was in Boston's place instead, where all the opps are injured and less talented. He had to face a relatively healthy Knicks team in the 1st round, an opponent much better than any of those teams that the Celtics beat, and the refs also stole a game from his team in that series.

It started by getting rid of Tobias Harris. He's the number one reason the Sixers can't get over that hump.

looking like they have a really good chance at george with the new report. If they cant get him morey will find another star, they have the cap space for a 3rd star. Embiid/maxey/3rd star should make the conference finals no sweat unless knicks make a trade and/or mil figures it out.
