Wasnt aware, advance defensive Metrics, 1987 MJ was already All-D 1st team atleast 2nd team.
Wasnt aware advance defensive Metrics, 1987 MJ was Top 15 shot blocker as guard in big men, front court heavy era.
I'm convinced that 37.1 PPG offensive onslaught overshadowed everything MJ did defensively that year.
or He was plainly punished by NBA as an "how dare you?" venture into Big Men Wilt, Kareem, moses, Russell territory at 6'6"
sorta like saying "stay in you lane kid". MJ could've been first Back-2-back DPOY before Rodman.

He made a way better case for 88 but there's still talk he didn't deserve the one he won. And these are just numbers, there's the subjective stuff like reputation, narrative, and impact you can't measure statistically. I think maybe Mj had a narrative of homerun Steals for dunks that was similar to the Lebron chase down narrative. Flashy and more entertaining than the ho hum aspects of defense like securing the Defensive board lol. But you've gotta ask yourself, in an era where most of the guys were in the paint could a guard have more Defensive impact than a big man. I don't think he could.

DPOY on a losing team? I don’t think so. The real robbery was Pippen in the mid 90’s, should have definitely won one.

Scottie Pippen was always his own worst enemy. no matter how much fans campaign for him for DPOY. He wasn't truly deserving of it.
especially, if you as a player always complaining. asking for trade. sitting out. quitting on team. sabotaging championship runs by getting surgery during seasons. cursing out GM publicly. being envious of Kukoc or Jordan.
and unlike season MVP ATG players get as a consolation prize for all those underappreciated years, DPOY is not like that at all.
Funniest thing is OP loved LeBron when he used to post here. Now he hates him cuz he threatens MJ

None of that has anything to do with dpoy worthiness. You can do better than that.

He has become a bitter old man. How easily he can manipulate everything, the media (klutch sports), lakers (draft my heart attacked kid or else I'm walking), performances (Balco triple cocktail of EPO, HGH and PEDs), podcast with JJ, the refs (begging for call every play, crying, flopping) etc etc.
I liked him when he straight up balled. I even forgave him for Heat super team collusion in his peak prime. just because he was balling and nothing else.
But his shyt is now out of control now. complaining about missed awards, accholades. But never talks about 2011 finals choke job. stuff like that.

voters be it media or head coaches look at everything holistically in that season alone when they vote. Reason why Pippen came up short every year.
reason why Peyton and Kawhi and even Artest won DPOY quietly by not being a drama queen every other week.
Pippen was no less defender than them. Like I said. Pippen is his own worst enemy.

It's not the quiet player of the year award. It's for defensive performance and Scottie was definitely worthy of winning one without getting into who you'd take ot away from. Mj as the thread is addressing, probably shouldn't have won the one they gave him either but he did. You can't tell me a guard had more defensive impact than a 7 footer did in an era where everyone is close to the paint. Especially Akeem Olajuwon.

^^^ Alvin Robertson and MJ
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p0M2WPEkE_w&t=09m18s
High steals players like Alvin Robertson and MJ have 2x steals at home
High blocks players like Eaton and MJ have 2x blocks at home
Only MJ had high steals and blocks, so his overall "stocks" inflation at home was a little higher than the norm
The 5-game sample is meant to refute this and say that MJ's abnormal home inflation is due to bad record-keeping... But obviously, a 5-game sample isn't viable and no sample is possible because there's no reason to believe the new subjective ruling is any better than the original.. Subjective stats like steals, blocks, assists and rebounds are set in stone - there's no effective review of them..

1987 All Defensive 1st Team
-Michael Cooper, Los Angeles Lakers
• Dennis Johnson, Boston Celtics
• Alvin Robertson, San Antonio Spurs
• Kevin McHale, Boston Celtics
• Hakeem Olajuwon, Houston Rockets
1987 All Defensive 2nd Team
• Maurice Cheeks, Philadelphia 76ers
• Derek Harper, Dallas Mavericks
• Rodney McCray, Houston Rockets
• Paul Pressey, Milwaukee Bucks
• Mark Eaton, Utah Jazz
after 236, 125 (blew 200 and 100 wide open).......
they vote this guy 8th for 1987 DPOY. Thats fine.
they still gotta atleast give him All-Defensive honors for creating history!
10 players cant be better than 1987 MJ defensively, I can understand 9 players.
Just like Kobe's last 3 All Defensive 1st team Walk-ins because of LAL franchise, Cooper, DJ, McHale had few walked right in too just for being part of NBA Royalty Franchises like LAL and CELTICS and ROCKETs (1981, 1986 finalist).
OR
1987 MJ was deliberately punished for being too quick on defense for impeding offenses otherwise results in more highlights and viewership.
Revisionists need to look into MJ's 1987 season along with 1988 season.
