How far was straight away center field at the Polo Grounds? Had to be over 500 feet, no?
Just looked as I was posting and it was 450 feet. Crazy.

The eye-hand coordination on that catch is insane.

Wow, I didn't realize Willie Mays was still alive.
RIP
It just hit me that Willie Mays last game was in 1973, which means you're old enough to have taken your kids to watch him play. I wonder if you ever did.

483 to the deepest part of the park.
RIP to one of the absolute GOATs in any sport.

That Mariana’s Trench just the left of the video is where it went to 483. He got it at 450.
One of the most iconic catches ever of course. There have been some since that rival it but that had never been done before when it happened so you have to give it there.
Andruw Jones has one of the greatest: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=s5ZlGme4Eh8&pp=ygUeYW5kcnV3IGpvbmVzIHNwaWRlciBtYW4gY2F0Y2gg
But Mays IS on the baseball Mount Rushmore. True legend gone.

I met him once in a professional setting a decade ago at Stanford; he was already gone mentally then unfortunately.
