Bro, this is nothing. He literally called himself the bitw after he won, that was cringe. This… is just a bad speech by a basketball player, not a motivational speaker.

The Championship partying is just the start. Tatum is going to be in the Olympics and sign a 350 million dollar contract. And there is a strong rumor Ella Mai is carrying his second child. OP will have a lot of chances to hate on whatever Tatum says when he's happy.

He’s speaking nothing but facts. Most people were hoping the Celtics would lose so they could shit on Tatum.

I guess we’ll never know.

lmfaoHe is the face. He’s like 3rd in jersey sales and has tons of commercials, Tatum is incredibly popular regardless of how good or bad of a player you think he is.

Eh... Tatum aint a bad guy. He lacks that Kobe or tmac or vince Carter intensity and creativity but he still a really great player top 10 or 15 in the league.

Eh... Tatum aint a bad guy. He lacks that Kobe or tmac or vince Carter intensity and creativity but he still a really great player top 10 or 15 in the league.

IMO he's a really hard guy to peg. Yes homo.

On one hand, Boston doesnt really run any kinda offense that gets easy buckets for a specific player. A lot of teams run plays/offenses geared toward getting their best scorers in good positions to score and leaning on that. The Celtics just spread it out and do drive-and-kick every single play. They dont run plays that feature anyone. Tatum and Brown take the most shots but it's not from running plays. They just take the most pullup threes. And while you cant argue the team result, it doesnt specifically accentuate Tatum or anyone else. So you could argue he'd look better as a scorer in an offense built more directly for him.

On the other hand... when he does take his turns with the 1 on 1 drive-and-kick improv, it's just not very convincing to me that he would be a 'heavyweight' scorer anyway. And I dont mean by raw ppg, but able to get volume and efficiency against good opponents in meaningful games. Some of it is the aforementioned system aspect, but I think some of it is also he's just not entirely 'that guy.'

How you weigh being a good scorer/all around player against other guys who are better scorers but less well rounded is tricky. If youre in a game 7 and you have role players and you just need a guy to get buckets, do you want Tatum or Maxey? I think you want Maxey. Tatum or Mitchell? Mitchell. And there's a fair amount of guys like that right now IMO. It's funny because I used to be a guy who valued the two-way game more than most and was typically on the other side of this argument. But as the game has evolved I just see being the head of the offensive snake as a more and more disproportionately important thing. And I think on an AVERAGE team, Tatum is probably not one of the guys best suited for crunch time in that role. But again, I do place some degree of value in him being a plus at his position as a defender, rebounder, passer. So it's hard to say which players he's 'better' than.

Tatum is a significantly better player than Maxey, and I think clearly better than Mitchell as well. Maxey struggles in the regular season as a first option ffs.

Did I say better player, or did I say "If it's game 7 and I have my role players and I just need a bucket getter"?

That was kinda the whole point of the post. That I wasnt sure which quality makes for the 'better player.'

Even if that's your qualifier I don't think you're aware how bad Maxey was without Embiid. His TS% iirc was like 53-54% and that was in the REGULAR SEASON. He isn't a first option, you're getting destroyed in the first round if he is (if you even make the playoffs).

Well again, I specified big playoff moments, not regular season. I believe Tatum's regular season numbers oversell him, so maybe Maxey's undersell him. I didnt see Philly much in the regular season so I dont know all the context to his numbers, but I do know this was his first year in that role and when Embiid wasnt in the lineup they had NOTHING useful on offense. So this year's regular season stats are probably worst case scenario for efficiency.

And maybe I am over relying on post season recency bias. But I value the post season more for evaluating players. If you only have this year's playoffs to go on I think youd definitely take Maxey over Tatum. Again Im talking ONLY about scoring. And it's not like this was an anomaly for Tatum and hes normally a post season riser. His playoff track record is spotty.

Give Tatum Phillys lineup without Embiid this past season and tell me how good you think his shooting % looks. Im willing to bet not great.

I would imagine better than Maxey's. If Embiid doesn't play, I would expect dreadful efficiency from Maxey in a playoff series. Just last year Tatum put up 27.2 PPG on 58.5 TS% in the playoffs I think you're underrating him quite a bit.
