I'm not a Paul George fan but losing him would be the death blow... and even if he comes back I'm sick of the phrase "when healthy."

When Kawhi Leonard was signed in the summer of 2019 it was supposed to be the move that finally made them the kings of LA. And I won't pretend to have foreseen how bad everything would go, just this past season when I really should have known better I picked them to win the West because Leonard finally was playing a 70+ game season. We all should have realized that what looked like a promising sign was in reality one of the worst things they could have done. It may not even be possible to have a full postseason of Kawhi Leonard but if it is you will first have to give him a lot of rest in the regular season.

So of course he is going to the Olympics this summer.

I don't know how many more games he will play with a run in the Olympics but I primarily view this as the opportunity to have a season-ending injury before the season even begins. He absolutely should not go to Paris. The Warriors found a way to keep Wiggins from going to the Olympics, why are the Clippers allowing this? Especially with Leonard being a far bigger concern than Wiggins. Whatever basketball he has left really should go to the Clippers. Especially after the ride he's taken them on.

Going back to the original sin of 2019, Leonard forced the Clippers to trade a young SGA, Danilo Gallinari, and 7 first round picks to the Clippers to get the now free agent George. They basically traded the current Thunder team that was just the top seed in the West for a guy that has missed almost 30 games a year in his five seasons and will now leave if they don't pay him top dollar for a 4+ year contract that would start when he's 34 years old.

Detail I find amusing: they are willing to give George 3 years at 150+ mil but not 4 years at 200+ mil...basically they are willing to **** themselves but only with a small one.

If I was Lawrence Frank I call every team in the NBA and ask what they would give me for Kawhi Leonard. I would rather have Mikal Bridges but I bet Leonard still has greater overall trade value. Maybe you get lucky and Philly gives you Maxey for him straight up. Or maybe a trade partner emerges that's being forced like you were in 2019 and you get something closer to the insane haul you gave away. Either way...

The Clippers are done. If they lose George this team is heading to the lottery.

The days of them being favorites to win it all like during the '20 season are long gone, even if PG13 stays.

Even IF the Clippers were healthy, it would be a bloodbath for them to make the Finals. Factoring in Kawhi literally get injured in the playoffs every year, why would anyone believe in them :lol

They've been making me feel like the Sterling Curse lives on. Just as snake bitten a franchise as we've ever seen, even when they're good, they're still somehow bad.

A main core of PG13, James Harden, Westbrook and the guy with busted knees. There was never a reason to believe in them.

The Clippers will be replacing George with bad publicity.

And to make matters worse, this is their head coach.

To be fair, Doc Rivers was a lot worse. Ty Lue was brilliant in the 2021 playoffs, guiding the Clippers to the semifinals even with a lot of injuries. He has periods of questionable coaching, though. An example was the long losing streak when Harden first joined. I would say he's an above average coach. Van Gundy is joining the coaching staff, so they will be in a good place coaching-wise.

Clippers front office can pull off miracles, so perhaps they could still be a contender. Personally, the best case scenario is to get an elite big. 76ers have a great combo in PG13 and Embiid, although everybody knows Embiid will always choke come playoffs time.

Doc led the Cs to 66-wins and a title, tho clearly t'was a very long time ago. But yes, it doesn't change the fact that he's largely responsible for letting the clippers blow a 3-1 lead against 7'1 brian windhorst during the 2020 disney bubble.

Meanwhile, lue just rode on kong's back en route to the 2016 title. He's never led a team to a winning record at all unless it had some stars in them. And with this current clippers team, i doubt they're going to contend in the finals esp. with kawhi and harden getting older now.

Losing a star the caliber of PG13 is never a good idea, but the Clippers were right to refuse a fourth year.
George is 34 years old already. His impact was reduced when Harden took the ball out of his hands, & cuz George & Leonard have too many duplicate skills. Not worth the $$$ & lower cap.
:kobe:
Instead, the Clips have cap flexibility, allowing them to re-sign Harden, and adding Batum, Derrick Jones Jr, Kevin Porter, Kris Dunn & Mo Bamba. Now they have a deep roster with a bunch of guys who can make plays off the dribble, or grind on defense.

Now to make it work, the Clips are relying on Harden & Leonard to stay healthy.

Stranger things have happened!
