star Jayson Tatum has agreed on a five-year, $314 contract extension, including a player option and trade kicker, sources told ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski on Monday.
Tatum, 26, led Boston to its 18th NBA title with a five-game victory over the Dallas Mavericks in the NBA Finals, averaging 22.2 points, 7.8 rebounds and 7.2 assists as the Celtics passed its forever rivals, the Los Angeles Lakers, for the most championships in NBA history.

They should have looked him right in the eye and offered less than the max, then asked him wtf he's gonna do about it.

The starting five is signed through 2026. Improvements without great draft picks will be almost impossible but this core has a 4 year window and has already won a ring. One of my main concerns is that Stevens might get bored with just maintaining this team but if he doesn't it's easy to like the Celtics' prospects.

CELTICS probably do appreciate after losing Len Bias and Reggie Lewis like talent.
They really missed out on 1 championship in late 80s and another in early to mid-90s.
Not one but two $300+ Mil contracts. some thing they truly understand that we as casual fans cannot.
Push come to shove. Every half-baked semi-superstar will leave BOS to LA in a heart beat, center or non-center.
BOS probably wanted to lock up their stars in their entire peak prime. good for them.
Rumor has it. Wemby will end up in LA just like Kareem, Shaq, Dwight, AD, LBJ, Kawhi, PG if SAS dont surround him with necessary talent.

I don't get the Celtics buying into his hero ball, and media hype.
Dude is above average and typically does not carry the team.
BROWN DOES.

Perfectly stated (shockingly).
Them's the facts.
Ive never understood why teams dont have the guts to say "we give max contracts to BITW, all time great type players, and then go down the curve from there."
He's a nice player. Very good. But he's not irreplaceable. In terms of winning, he needs the Celtics more than they need him. Youre telling me he's not gonna stick around if the offer is 290 instead of 314? Hes gonna leave and go win less somewhere else for a fraction more money? If so let him go.
Its not that I care if he makes money, it just makes these franchises, that represent so many people and so many fans across an entire city, grovel and beg and overextend for a guy who in the big picture is just a guy. Hes not generating Lebron or Steph team valuation or revenue for the city of Boston. They dont "need Jayson Tatum at all costs." And same with Jaylen Brown.
If you give these guys big deals but a bit less than max, maybe you avoid the second apron, have a little bit more team flexibility. Stay competitive longer. Kinda the point of the league right?
And these guys arent even the worst examples. We all know the max deals Bradley Beal and Andrew Wiggins got. Teams are just sniveling cucks when it comes to begging stars to stay. It's icky, honestly. Have some ****ing dignity in your franchise. Making a guy bigger than the organization because youre afraid a ****ing fringe allstar is gonna leave is pathetic.

I think you guys are missing some things
1. He will likely never be in the top 5 highest paid in any individual season
2. In the parity era you dont have to be a great player to win. The NFL has the most parity and you see Nick Folks, Eli Manning win
3. He might not be in the Luka, Jokic, Giannis tier but he probably is in the next one. He does have the post playoff points and wins since he came into the league and by the end of this contract might project into the top 5 in a few playoff stats.
I dont know why Tatum's accomplishments kind of get ignored

I disagree, I think both of them take turns dominating as they are relatively close in quality. Brown did more of it this PS, some others it's been Tatum. These two are way too close in quality to name one above the other IMO. They're a proper NBA duo with the most stacked roster behind them.
