View Full Version : Sixers sign Caleb Martin
More than likely he is going to start at PF. Don’t know too much about him besides 3 and D. But outside of his playoff performance not sure what type of player he is on offense and defense (consistently). Turned down a lot of money with the Heat to play with Sixers. Not sure why outside of us being legit contenders. Anyone who watched him a lot got a take on what type of player he is?

I bet his agent ****ed up. He had a good postseason in 2023 and the Heat offered him a lot of money. He then looked very average last season. I could not find further details when I tried to research things but I don't see how he takes 32 mil from Philly if Miami was still offering 65. Philly is likely better on paper but it's not such a great opportunity that it's worth giving up half the money.

Agreed. Taking 1/2 is insane.
And if he looked average last season makes me wonder if this would be another D.Melton signing. Where we signed Melton in hopes he be a really good 3 and D player if not take the next leap as a 3 & D player. But he was pretty my average at best his two seasons here. Same with Josh Richardson. Came here and was very pedestrian. But I guess even if he is getting him for 1/2 or what Miami offered wouldn’t be bad. Guess we will see. I haven’t watched him enough to offer an opinion.

He made a little bit of a name for himself lighting up the Celtics in 2023. If Morey thinks he's a Celtics killer that would explain Sixers interest.

Good signing IMO, Martin's got some dog in him. Adds leadership. He'll play hard when the chips are down. Which is important on a team with PG and Tro-el, respectfully.
In terms of game, hes an average 3&D guy. When he's hot from outside, like two years ago, he looks great. When he's not, like last year, he'll look replaceable. The signing doesnt like, "vault" Philly into anything, but it's a good pickup as a role piece I think.
The money thing, if true, is kinda shocking. If he was leaving 1/5, 1/4 of his potential earnings on the table, I could understand it. But HALF!?

Good deal. $8M per is reasonable. The $65m report has to have been bogus trying to drum up interest. Or just bad reporting.

Like others said he isn’t special but 8 mil for a guy who can start playoff games is a total steal. Morey had very little space to work with and got 2 starters in oubre and Caleb for 16 mil combined. Meanwhile there are other 5th starters who go for that by themselves. Kcp Bruce brown etc
Caleb is a rock solid role player, sucks to lose him.

If it were a four year deal he'd be an idiot but 2 years. It they win he'll get a bag if they lose the blame falls on other guys.

I heard the Miami deal had something to do with a player option he had. Not totally sure just going from memory but i think he had to opt into his option for Miami to avoid the 2nd apron next season.
