From the Basketball Head Coach himself......?

A brutal, honest, in-person Analysis of 1988 MJs defense.

All the 'Strengths' and 'weakness' of MJs style of defense pointed out by Head Coach himself......

Also, if he was truly deserving of 1988 DPOY or not!.................

For Full Disclosure, I was at all of these games at Chicago Stadium that season. I got to see MJ's Defense in Person (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ksdh97oDFv0)

It's a dumb video because no one else has a video like that - there's no video breaking down any other perimeter player's defense on such a mainstream scale - there might be a video of Kawhi or Tony Allen that no one watched (I'm guessing - I have no idea), but I doubt there's any video that breaks down possession-by-possession of Lebron's defense, or even Kobe's.

Only MJ is treated this way where STANDARD THINGS like being late on screens in the 1st quarter is made out to be a big liability that he couldn't easily correct if he needed or wanted.. It's absurd... If the game was on the line or it as a critical part of the game, there are few lowlights on defense compared to the 1st quarter when all those highlights were taken of him letting Wittman shoot - this isn't evidence of him being a bad defender... When he let Rex Chapman get going and get unstoppable - that wasn't evidence of him being a bad defender - it was something that people noticed because it was such a massive exception to the rule... Other guys like Pippen, Lebron or Kawhi have guys drop 50 on them where they played horrific defense that pales in comparison to MJ letting Wittman hit a few shots in the 1st quarter.. but no one is making a video about it because only the GOAT isn't allowed to be a little late on screens in the 1st quarter (held to a GOAT standard).

but carry on

When BJ Armstrong said that Mj didn't like chasing guys off-screens, he wasn't saying that as evidence that MJ wasn't a good defender - he was just pointing out that MJ was like everyone else and hated chasing guys off screens..

It was common for MJ to see if a scrub like Wittman was hitting in the 1st quarter before he started guarding him, aka "why waste energy if you don't need to", which is smart by MJ - I'm sure he didn't realize this would be used against him 30 years later to say that he wasn't a great defender.. Anyone that continues to watch that game will see that Wittman goes ice cold as the game progresses as MJ starts to guard him

Yeah MJ was great at chasing guys off screens and did it when it mattered most at age 35 in Game 7 of the ECF and completely shut Reggie down in the 4th.

Do remember......

Head Coach is only discussing 1988 25YO MJ who is using all his 'freak' athleticism, physical might before his mental capacity which is still in learning stage to accumulate that defensive experience.

Here is 1998 35YO MJ 'mental' brilliance.....

when stealing that 1998 Game 1 clutch steal and game winning dunk on Gill. Here, he is just too old.

He is too old. heavy legs too (late in the game). Legs are slow (too old). what does he do? despite lacking lateral quickness. He moves 2 steps laterally ahead of baller taking steps after dribble......

MJ isnt done yet. Here is that mental knowledge. Watch his non-poking, non-reaching entire arm......

He literally semi-lifts and moves baller every so slightly out of the way during baller's re-gathering dribble while poking the ball away simultaneously. This is just too smart imo. Pippen never ever learned this from MJ ever. He can never do this.

Referees are too busy seeing the reaching hand and arm. A highly questionable "foul type" situation can never be called at such clutch play. also, MJ does these things defensively ever so slightly and they all come in the "gray" zone of defense and foul calling.

Please.......watch the replays at 0.37 sec. its clear as daylight. How effortlessly MJ uses his non-poking entire arm.

This mental knowledge of defense which himself not losing balance (because of weights lifting) was not there in 25 YO 1988 MJ. That MJ would've gotten into foul call.

Mental Knowledge of Defense. Knowing where the referee is. He cannot see MJs non-reaching entire arm. MJ knows he lacks defensive quickness at this age. He lacks lateral movement at this age. But still comes up with clean game winning steal.

He does this again at 35 YO in 1998 Finals Game 6 to Malone. But that one is mentally different. knowing Malone cannot see where hornasack is. So Malone also doesnt know where MJ is on court too.

I saw Jordan play in person around the same time but all that shit runs together. Outside games with some historical significance or statistical accomplishment I don’t remember what precise year some memory is from.

Michael Jordan won the coaches voting for DPOY 4 times (meaning that someone else ended up with the award 3 times, because of the media), and this video gives you a sense as to why.

I don't think he was going off by memory in the video.
