Modern Mark Price?
Maybe! He's way more of a defensive playmaker though. Racks up the steals and blocks. Maybe Mark Price on offense and Derrick White on defense. But let's not get ahead of ourselves...

Not only have the handles looked good, but the mid-range and floater shots have been on point. This is promising...

Derrick White on defense.....
Between that and Chet being KD on offense I've seen some wild comps here on ish that make no sense whatsoever.
Derrick White is an all NBA level defender.
This guy will be Steph Curry on defense at the very best and a complete hunted liability at worst

No one's saying he will be anything. He could, is the important word to focus on. Reed was known for his unusually high steal and block rates in college despite his size. So far over two SL games, he's accumulated 6 steals and 4 blocks - 3.0 spg and 2.0 bpg. In 30.9 minutes per game to boot.
Game 1: 1 steal and 3 blocks (29.8 minutes played)
Game 2: 5 steals and 1 block (32 minutes played)
In college, Reed averaged 2.5 spg and 0.7 bpg in 28.9 mpg. 3.4 steals and 1.0 block per 40. 4.6% steal percentage and 2.5% block percentage. Those are outlier numbers for his size.
He's obviously not going to be exactly Derrick White defensively because he's a couple of inches shorter in height and a few inches less in wingspan. More like a Nash/Curry-sized Stockton on defense with some of that undersized shot-blocking factor that Derrick White has.
He's undeniably a defensive playmaker who plays bigger than his size. That's the general comparison to Derrick White that I was making.
Drafting a Kentucky guard you’re in good business. You can almost bet they will be productive for your team.

I think this is going to age badly. This kid is everywhere on defense.

College steal rates are actually one of the best measures of functional athleticism at the NBA level.

I've heard that before. I can't remember what analyst/analytics guy uncovered it. But Reed's block and steal rates were routinely brought up by the numbers-focused draft guys online.

I definitely would have taken Sheppard at 2 over Sarr. I watched several KY games and Reed was very impressive, especially when he really decided to take over.
I haven't been impressed with Sarr at all. :(
Carrington looks good though.

If a white american point guard is drafted in the top 3, then you know he has to be an exceptional talent.

It's the first time that the first American drafted has been white since ... Kent Bensen in 1977!
The Stock rate was super hyped by a ton of the analytics guys, but in addition to that, he showed up at the combine and measured out great athletically. Including the top vertical number iirc. And he's an elite shooter.

Per 36 it’s pretty much 20/4/5/2.4 steal on 63% TS. Those are some good numbers for him. It would be interesting to see how he would handle an increased workload. I haven’t watched any Houston games this year but they have been cooking.
Last season I was reading clutchfans after Warriors beat Houston and saw that over there they call Reed Sheppard “Cocaine Curry” :lol

He's a pretty damn good shooter. 46.2% 3PT on 3.7 catch-and-shoot threes/g (50.0% on 3.5 over last 8 games); 50.0% on 1.6 pull-up threes/g (53.3% on 1.9 over last 8 games). He's got more to offer on offense (and defense) than Luke Kennard, who's a comparable level of three-point shooter.
He'll have to work on that handle if he wants to approach anything close to Trae or Dame, let alone Curry. Those guys were taking 6 to 8+ pull-up threes in their usual prime seasons.

I think the nickname was more tongue in cheek from what I gathered. He doesn’t need to be compared to those guys I don’t think that’s his game.
What’s interesting though is compare his stats to someone like Desmond Bane.

+6.7 BPM on the season. 3.3% STL, 1.5% BLK. +2.7 EPM (+2.2 off, +0.5 def; 90th percentile/37th in the NBA). Despite his smaller role, only Durant (1.6), Sengun (1.5), and Thompson (1.2) have more estimated wins (EW) than Sheppard (1.0).
+10.6 BPM over the last 8 games. 4.0% STL, 1.4% BLK.

Which is nuts, considering his wingspan. You watch this kid, and he's just a step ahead on defense mentally, because he has to be. Teams are going to go at him, so he has had to figure a way out to muck up as many possessions as possible. Sure, you might get some easy shots against him, but he's going to try and ruin enough possessions to balance it out.

Yeah some people don't want to give Reed credit for his defense. They see what they want to see.

Essentially the #1 option on offense tonight without KD. Huge win on the road against a playoff-level team.

Also active as shit defensively. Of course he can be picked on by bigger guys but he competes on that end for sure.

He has the brilliant move of shoving his defender hard when the ref isn't looking and then racing off to the 3 point line. Unless he's depending on favorable officiating, that may be hard to build your game around. I know the league wants to prop up favorites like Doncic to win back an alienated segment of the audience, but that's asking a lot.

Maybe hes naturally much darker than we realize.

I have. Miller was a bona fide star, with a range of talents. The ONLY thing I see this guy doing is shoving people off ball and then running for an open shot. I'll be convinced if I see him doing more than that. Annoying see people build their game off a loophole.
