184 to the Nuggets.

Games on NBAtv right now. Kiki and Alex English dropped 100 points on them on like 70% shooting.

That was in 83, wasn't the Bad Boy Pistons. Thomas and Bill were the only ones on that team who was around for the Bad Boys era. Was probably Bills first year with them.

Yea but 184 points??

That's crazy work. And that's without 3s mostly.

I thought it was a slugfest back then.

Well...they literally didn't give up the most points in history because the Pistons won that game scoring 186.

I don't think the "slugfest" aspect really started until the late 80s. The pace in that era, particularly the Nuggets, was insane. The 83 Nuggets played at a 112 pace. They were a bad defensive team that were just going to run and try to score as much as possible.

To put into perspective, in this spaced out and fast era the Wizards led the league last year at 102.5.

Yea but with all the handchecking how could they possibly be moving up and down the court so freely and swiftly?

This was an era with the champion Showtime Lakers, Celtics, and one of the GOAT teams the 83 Sixers.

It was considered a Golden era.

This is completely irrelevant to the Nuggets scoring 184 points in one game :lol

That's like 1984 before the "bad boys" existed or were a thing

But Bill was the ultimate bad boy.

How did he let this happen on his watch?

Because none of that stuff had started yet. The game didn't slow down until the Pistons slowed it down, starting in 1986-87.

A concerted decision was made by Chuck Daly to transform the way he coached/the team played following their 1st round loss in the '86 playoffs.

"He knew the league's rhythm was upbeat, as NBA teams topped 110 points per game. He also realized that teams shrank the court come playoff time and made half-court skirmishes the norm."

"The more I thought about it, the more I knew that slowing down the tempo was the way to go back then. Everyone wanted to run up and down the court and put up big numbers.

"By slowing it down, we could frustrate the rest of the league. Our identity was going to be our defense. On offense we wanted to establish a half-court game that could produce about 100 points a night. Our goal was to play every game as if it were a playoff game."

The Bad Boy Era thus began with the 1986-87 season.

I can't tell if OP is trolling or unintentionally being dumb. The defensive slugfest and snail's pace was a thing of the late 80s and 90s. This is common knowledge.

1983 is not late 80s.

The pistons were a running team that had Isiah going crazy at the time. 11 of the 14 players weren’t on the bad boys. No Rodman, Dumars, Salley, Edwards, Aguirre/Dantley, or Mahorn. They were 18th in opposing ppg. The team you know as the Bad Boys were third…then second…then first 3 years in a row. They stopped running and started posting up, slowing down the game, and kicking your ass.

It’s why people think Isiah Thomas suddenly got worse. They went from top 5 in pace to dead last several years in a row. Kinda like when Dallas went from running and scoring with Dirk and Nash to a defensive team that actually contended by slowing down.

Total style change.
