We need more innovation to solve some of the energy issues and innovation halts when you have a collapsing world economy due to old people out-numbering young people. It'd be a complete disaster and lead to near extinction, and eventually a re-starting of civilization.

You don’t even need to go that deep, the civil unrest of thanos’ing half the population will cause enough panic for businesses to pull back. We can definitely go back in population size though it’d take a few generations and new technology to take over the unskilled labor force. We already have a robot that can make pizza on the go while delivering and the tech for self driving trucks is already there, just needs to pass legislation. Truck driving would be some 8 million jobs in the US alone, and if trucks can go 24/7 we can have less of them on the road while costing about 1/5 of a truck driver’s salary to maintain. If you ever look at financials for a wholesaler, a good chunk of markups go to distribution cost. The top 10-20% of the labor force drives the world economy as is, we just need a way to incentivize educated people to have more(or the steady pace) of kids and uneducated to have less.
