In the Gold Medal game.

:biggums:

That's a bigger difference than the best team in the NBA vs a G-league team.

And people are talking about competition???

The gold medal game will be a joke and France will also lay down for Team USA because they're young and dumb, and the media is basically telling them "please lose - no one wants you to win"... young guys are impressionable and often affected by this kind of thing on a subconscious level.

I love the pivot that's happened over the last 24 hours :lol

But yea anyway, 16 points isn't astronomical for this USA team against international competition. There were many instances of 16 or more point spreads in the NBA last year. A few were as high as 19-20.

The Serbia game was the scare moment for Team USA. They should have lost that game and made it through. I think they'll destroy France. Hope I'm wrong but I see a 30-point blowout.

France will have serious homecooking from the refs. It's guaranteed. So USA is really playing 5 vs 8.

There's never been any pivot.

Team USA was 12 point favorites and -900 odds when they won Gold over France in 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

Now there 16 point and -1600 odds favorites for tomorrow's Gold Medal game vs France.

Competition?

This. If the US is able to overcome all these disadvantages and somehow manages to steal gold, when nobody expected them to, it will only enhance LeBron's argument as the GOAT.

Struggling against Serbia and South Sudan means we suck, not that we're good... Our struggles in this tourney proves we're worse than prior eras, not better... Struggling = not good... :hammerhead:

the media and today's fans have it backwards because they're dumb.. plain and simple.. Today's players have devolved into high-screen-roll spammers, which is why we can't dominate the world like we used to.

Today's players can barely beat 1-man teams, so they're nothing compared to prior eras and are worse at basketball - this tourney confirms it.

There certainly has. I don't remember people talking about how weak the competition is, especially compared to in the past. But now that the US has a close game and looks like they're going to win the gold again the conversation has switched there. Me thinks because the LeBronze high hopes that people had are out the window.

Back to an actual point rather than pointing out troll narratives...yes, international competition is as good as it's ever been. Still doesn't mean they're going to be anywhere near favorites against a US team. Particularly the A-team, which the US hasn't sent since 2012.

They didn't struggle against South Sudan (unless you're retardedly talking about a scrimmage game that meant nothing in which case lol), and Serbia has the best player on the planet.

clear-cut proof

the reality is that the US has been losing since 2002 because they undertook a 1-on-1 brand of ball ever since MJ retired...

this 1-on-1 brand has lasted in some form or fashion since he retired.. it's currently in a high-screen roll format that isn't 5-man basketball and freezes guys out (makes them stand in the corner)

We've all been saying the comp is a joke. You can look my posts up, I've said it the whole way. And the -1600 odds reflect that the public at large agrees with me.

If Curry didn't have perhaps the best Olympic basketball performance of all time the USA would've been bronze.

It's actually amazing what it took for this USA squad to beat a -1350 underdog Serbia.

International opponents have 61 NBA players due to better scouting - that's it.... Most of the 61 guys are borderline NBA guys, so there were just as many NBA-caliber guys back then, but the trend was not to play in the NBA because they weren't noticed/scouted...

And even if they were discovered, it took 5 years to get the best guys over here like Kukoc and Sabonis, while the lesser borderline NBA guys didn't make it at all.. so that's the difference - the borderline NBA guys all make the NBA today, but they stayed over in Europe in prior eras due to lack of scouting and ability to get them over here easily and quickly.

Ultimately, decorated international players that won a bunch of titles are better than someone that had a cup of tea in the NBA and a 17 minute career.. So there's a lot of reasons why the 61 to 9 disparity means nothing.. it's just more propaganda by the media... carry on

The 61 to 9 gap in NBA players is due to scouting

that's it

this is the historical record... there was no scouting back then like today, and it took 5 years for the BEST guys to make it over here - the rest stayed over in Europe - it wasn't worth it to bring a borderline NBA guy over here back then, but nowadays it's instant.

this accounts for the difference... And again, a decorated international player with a long career of titles is far superior than some G-league bum playing a trash brand of ball in the g-league and having a 17-minute NBA career.. so again, the 61 to 9 stat is meaningless.

you do realize that Actual basketball played on the floor has more to do with how good two teams are than what people think the basketball on the floor will look like which is what decides odds right?

The betting public is obviously going to favor a long list of names that are going to the Hall of Fame playing against 10 or 11 people when they have only heard of one or two of them. That is not a basketball evaluation.

eight Hall of Famer beat Lithuania by single jumper in 2000. Two years later Andre and Reggie Miller played hot potato unable to create a shot at the end of a game. They gave America its first loss with professionals ever. I think they finish six that year. Two years later, Duncan Iverson and a bunch of other stars came in third. In 2006 they lost to Greece. In 2008 they sent one of the greatest groups of talent in history and we’re still in dog fights. They have not lost at the Olympics since But they have lost individual games. They lost to France in the 2000 Olympics just came back to beat them in the gold.

The names on the opposing rosters decide who casual fans will bet on. It has nothing to do with how any of these teams actually play. Serbia got the silver medal while a team with like six or seven NBA All-Stars didn’t even finish top three in the World Cup last year and Jokic didn’t even play.

There is little to suggest great international teams would get blown out by these all star rosters that get sent.

NBA basketball basketball just doesn’t emphasize the same things most basketball does. The NBA takes teams with 10 guys who would be elite on teams all over the world and had been stars all their lives and shapes most of them into roles that makes them a shadow of what they could be. And it makes the stars play a game that doesn’t mesh easily with other stars.

Nba basketball makes superstars shine and role players look like less than they are.

Hard to change roles for 2 weeks after years of that.

These teams simply don’t play basketball equal to the names of the players.

90's basketball was the only decade that beat international teams by 30-40 ppg - every other "dream team" had a bunch of close games and wasn't consistently dominant.

this is because the 80's and 90's format produced the best 5-man basketball, chemistry, pure scoring (2-point scoring), and hoops instinct (quick decisions)

Since then, the NBA players are only a little more competitive then when we used to send the college players.. We lost 3 times in 2019 and 2004.. The game and 5-man basketball clearly devolved since 2000, so our favored talent is offset by the worst chemistry and brand in the world.

Odds are a literal projection of what the outcome is going to usually be. It isn't just guys names. That's bullshit. Team USA factually has far more talent than every other team by a country mile. Especially this year since a super A team was sent. This isn't Iverson and Marbury anymore.

I've done quite a bit of sports gamblin and I know all too well the pain of spreads and how close it always comes to covering or not. France could be down 20 most of the game and in garbage time cut the lead to 15 and screw anybody that bet on Team USA.

That's why I liked moneyline more but the problem with that is if you bet 100 bucks on Team USA today you'd only make 6 dollars. So it's worthless vs tremendous odds.

Bottom line, you know I have a PHd in odds analytics. What you gon say when France gets spanked today?

I'm going to expect an apology.

The 2020 team would be the most talented team in this tournament..... BY FAR

It's bball101 that the reason our favored talent barely wins and often loses is due to the worst brand of ball on the planet - we're just 1-on-1 players and don't play good 5-man basketball like we did in the 90's and 80's.

lol 20+? My brain is running sims, and I keep trying to stop US momentum. I don't think they can do it without seeming so obvious. I dunno if they win by 20, though. It's tough. I don't think it's an issue of 20 vs not 20 because it's either closer like 8-13 or large like 25+. It'll be hard for me to see it in that 'middle spread.'

Gobert is big trash. We have too much talent. It'd be funny to see us tested, but I don't see it. Depends on how bad we play + refs, but I can't see us losing. I think we win comfy regardless, even if it's just one of those games where we end up ahead by around 10-15 and they can never close the gap.

Edit: That's my real prediction, they prob start Gobert, but he WILL get played off the floor.

It would make Vegas money for the outcome to be on the side of France spread wise. This feels like a crazy blow out which will entice all the sucker's to bet USA. If I had to make a pinpoint guess maybe they win by 11 and the casino corporations laugh all the way to the bank. Hard to control but that would be the optimum outcome for the odds makers revenue.
