View Full Version : How would you rank the biggest box office draws since MJ? (Kobe, LeBron, Curry, etc)

I haven't looked into the numbers. I think #1 would either be Kobe or Curry. LeBron never had as much star power as them IMO. I'd probably rank them like this:

1) Curry
2) Kobe
3) LeBron

The peak (one season), and prime (multiple-season stretch) would remain unchanged. LeBron's longevity would tip the career star power/box office draw in his favor if you look at it in terms of value accumulated.

I'm not sure there has been anyone that could change that top three. Shaq, KG, Vince, Kidd, T-Mac, Nash, Dirk, and Duncan? I don't think so. Wade, Paul, and Dwight? Not sure. Howard at one point in Orlando had more endorsement deals than LeBron and routinely got the most All-Star votes.

KD, Westbrook, Harden, Kawhi? I wouldn't think so. Embiid, Giannis, and Jokic? Nah.

Thoughts?

While I think Curry doesn't come close to Lebron as a total package basketball player his influence and thus "box office draw" is 2nd to MJ only counting only MJ til present day.

Like MJ Curry changed the way basketball is played. While MJ changed the NBA from a post driven big men league to an iso driven guard league in hunt for the "next MJ" Curry and the Warriors changed it to a motion and pace based 3 pt contest.

The biggest similarity is Curry's shoe deal. He put UA on the map for basketball. I didn't even know them before Curry. That's the point where Lebron failed the most. A star of his magnutude should've either brought out hia own real subbrand or created a new company. No Lebron shoe gives off the vibe Jordan's have. The don't differ much from a Giannis or PG in terms of hype.

MJ was the furthest thing from an ISO driven guard. If the league changed into that it wasn't because of him - he didn't play like that.

Anyone who studied his game would likely come to the conclusion he was an off the ball 2 pt assassin like Curry is a 3 pt off ball assassin.

LeBron is all anyone talks about, he's the only reason this forum still exists but sure Kobe and Curry had more star power. Lol. There has never been a player who gets obsessed over as much as LeBron, not even close.

I know what MJ was, but that's what the youth took away from and that's hiw alot of wannabe MJs during the MJ to Lebron transition played like.

Just like the only thing alot of young people take away from Curry is shot jacking from any spot.

Lebron is such a physical unicorn that most ordinary people just aren't influenced by his game. Take a look outside of ish and the US.

Aside from that you already posted here when this place was full of Kobe nutjobs.

What does influencing playstyle have to do with people watching? :lol

Most people who watch basketball certainly aren't playing seriously.

Because people outside the US are watching aswell and ofc watch the players they can relate to. Maybe it's the US that has mostly non playing viewers.

If you change the product in itself indirectly you become the draw.

Lebron shoes had a bit of hype around them until around the end of his Miami tenure. Same as MJ around 13th or 14th model they just weren't as impressive. Sneaker design as a whole fell off a cliff in the 2000s- 2010s. Lebron had the challenge of trying to make a difference in an established mountain lol. Curry and Mj got to run with up and coming brands that needed a spark. Huge difference.

As for the Op I'm taking
Lebron
Curry
Kobe/Shaq
Iverson

Because it's the truth? Nobody is as polarizing as LeBron. I think guys like Kobe & Curry were more pleasing to the eye when both were on their game, but everyone always tunes in when LeBron is playing. This forum is likely going to die when he retires. He's all people talk about here.

Nobody is as polarizing as lebron simply because he does a great job at attracting attention to himself. All the stupid sht, fake reading of books, hypocritical and stupid statements, calling himself goat incessantly, flopping then denying it.. Most see through it and comment on it, but then you have sheeple brontards that completely buy into it.

Lebron's game is forgettable, not worth rewatching. He will be discussed because of accumulated stats, but otherwise, his ugly game will be forgotten.

The most watched finals series past Jordan involved both Curry and Lebron. The least watched involved Lebron and not Curry. The first past Cle/GS series had a drop in US rating, but a spike in Canadian ones. After that there was an overall decline.

Maybe both is the right answer.

2020 was COVID year and the Lakers had an uninteresting Finals opponent.

Like you said, the lowest rated Finals series Steph was in came against non LeBron teams. 2022 Finals ratings were surprising low because that is the year everything went back to normal and Boston is a big market.

These two in a series going up against each other draws a lot of people. Even when they faced off in 2023, it was the most watched 2nd round series since 1996.

Luckily you can just look up road attendance by team by year and see that OP is spitting bullshit.

Not only did Kobe play for the most popular franchise by a pretty wide margin with the most bandwagon fans nationwide, he was doing so during his absolute peak years obviously as he was there his entire career. And there was still a year with young LeBron in his first Cleveland stint with that horrid roster that he outdrew prime Kobe. 2007? With MVP level Kobe and a baby LeBron? LeBron was breathing down his neck in 2004 when the Lakers still had Shaq and LeBron was a ROOKIE.

Once LeBron joined Miami he never looked back except Kobe's retirement year.

If LeBron decides to announce a retirement year, you will see the Lakers sell every game out the entire year.

Cavaliers outdrew Warriors 2015, 2017, 2018. Lakers outdrew Warriors 2019, 2020, 2022. 2021 was deleted.

Warriors outdrew Cavs in 2016. Warriors outdrew Lakers in 2023, 2024.

So yeah, the end of LeBron's career. Again, just wait for the retirement announcement. It will be the highest average attendance probably since MJ hung it up with the Bulls in 98.

I mean is it really that much of a hot take to say Lebron? He's been consistently the biggest jersey seller for alot of seasons, the highest rated finals along with Steph. Biggest endorsement earner, when he left the eastern conference ratings took a hit. He's literally carried nba/sports media on his back for almost 20 years. Sports media has shows basically dedicated to him year round even when he's doing nothing of note. There's other stars but there's none like what he's done in his time. There's alot of things he's been able to do with his career that aren't possible for anyone else because he's that box office guy.

Follow the money.

What franchise is worth the most? It seems it is the Warriors.

How could that be with Kobe and then LeBron donning the Lakers purple and gold?

Because we're talking about Steph, the most electric basketball player since Jordan.
