Hotel union workers are now on strike at hotels across 9 US cities. As many as 10,200 hotel workers at 25 hotels stretching from Boston to the West Coast to Hawaii went on strike starting early Sunday morning. But, as planned, 840 went back to work Tuesday.

“I walked out today because we just cannot keep working paycheck to paycheck, not able to pay our bills,” Jerome Roberts, a dishwasher at the Hilton Baltimore Inner Harbor said in a statement. “Going on strike is hard, but not nearly as hard as trying to get by on what we are getting paid. We told the bosses in our negotiations how much we are struggling right now but they didn’t care. We are on strike to make them pay.”

Companies would be forced to pay a living wage to housecleaners if over 1 in 5 weren't undocumented(at least half are foreign born). Companies don't need to pay a lot if there's an illegal waiting in the wings to work. We should be trying to bring more Americans into the workforce anyways because automation tech is rapidly evolving. In 20 years we won't need near as many maids, truck drivers, waitresses and factory food workers. Then what are we going to do with all the wetbacks and anchor babies rooted in the US?

The immigrant who is arguing for better wages has millions of immigrants behind them that will be willing to do their job for that pay or even less.

Reality is housekeepers have always been close to minimum wage workers, and they should probably remain that way. One big thing that's different these days is very few companies give raises for entry level jobs based on seniority or performance. The job comes with a wage, and it basically stays that way until the government raises the minimum wage. 2 big reasons why. First there's a Mexican or Central American waiting in the wings for the job if someone doesn't want to do it for the minimum, and 2nd this nation has become so litigious, even if companies want to give raises, they afraid to because they can be sued. Give a white lady a raise, there could be a discrimination suit right after from her minority co-workers. Give an American a raise, there could be a discrimination suit if the other workers are immigrants. Generally smaller companies tend to be more generous as well to their employees but the government is wiping them out slowly because of strict regulations, taxes and fees that only big companies can absorb.
